I don’t see why you can’t make a keyword a phrase instead of one word. Maybe I am oversimplifying it but it works for me. I would have keyword phrases like these for example.

dog in carIf you want to be more generic you can use one keyword for all the laughs and put that on a folder entitled laughs.
These would be keyword phrases. Remember you can also use folders to put your keywords.

A folder for Sam’s keywordsFor me this works. I am not saying there is not room for improvement like the searchable markers. I use markers for different things like change of a person I am interviewing or change in location not for specifics of the interview.

Adobe’s UI is very messy and cluttered in my opinion. I like simple.

You can do pretty much the same thing using the finder. The way I do it is on my Mac I set up a new desktop with my finder windows open. On my magic mouse I swipe 2 fingers when I want to look at that particular desktop. you could set up multiple desktops if you have more finder windows to display but one is usually good enough. If I need to drag anything into FCP X, I make sure the FCP X browser is on the other monitor so I can see it while looking at the finder windows where my content resides. Then I can drag whatever I need.
