You can get a spine from selected edges. Use Structure/Edit Spline/Edge to Spline

don’t know where the tutorial you mentioned is so I’d need more info
    – what kind of ‘splat’, can you post a picture?
    – flat end result or with some dimension?

Off the top it might be a morph or maybe a PLA animate but if it’s all one piece with enough subdivision maybe you could use a spherify deformer

November 13, 2008 at 4:45 am in reply to: Extruded earth technique?

this one looks like it was done with an eps file of the land outlines which was extruded then Wrapped into a sphere. It’s hard to be so smooth in the outlines otherwise with a large number of polys – doesn’t mean it wasn’t so though. It’s easy to do a single layer land mass earth with textures but extruded like that…

i don’t know where to get such a detailed eps of the earth but the general concept is easy enough. Otherwise with textures (alpha and displacement) this is the sort of thing that’s possible. Even with a biggish texture the edges are still a bit chunky… which is why I think that one is an eps/ai file extruded (or something like that)

    did a google search…

this is interesting since it just uses the grouping you get by selecting a number of objects and not any fancy setup, the only question then is how to quickly select the bits you want.

without knowing your setup it’s tough to know if a solution exists in xpresso or otherwise but could you have a ‘master null’ that everything is under that can do your rotation then have other groupings under that or is it more complex yet?

faster computer, lots of memory, try not to have more detail than you need, keep things like GI and Area light on a ‘I actually need this’ basis, there are ways to make it look close without using them. Read the manual it often has hints about settings that would be faster in some situations. But really 3D is complex enough there are always lots of ways to be quicker and without seeing your current scene it’s hard to know for sure what would help.
