Extruded earth technique?
Posted by Gareth Wrafter on November 12, 2008 at 10:07 amdoes anyone know a way I can create the different continents like on the image shown and making it accurate or near enough I have tried various methods but just cant seem to get the desired look or the accuracy of the extruded earth

November 13, 2008 at 4:45 amthis one looks like it was done with an eps file of the land outlines which was extruded then Wrapped into a sphere. It’s hard to be so smooth in the outlines otherwise with a large number of polys – doesn’t mean it wasn’t so though. It’s easy to do a single layer land mass earth with textures but extruded like that…
i don’t know where to get such a detailed eps of the earth but the general concept is easy enough. Otherwise with textures (alpha and displacement) this is the sort of thing that’s possible. Even with a biggish texture the edges are still a bit chunky… which is why I think that one is an eps/ai file extruded (or something like that)

April 2, 2009 at 12:27 amWrap Deformer but make sure the extrude uses Regular Grid on the Caps with a fairly small value so it all wraps smoothly. The size and latitude and longitude settings control the amount of wrap. Radius just controls the final sphere size.

November 19, 2014 at 9:03 amThank you Brian
I was fighting with it yesterday and using a small Regular Grid solved the problem.
