Personally I’d go for the Retina over the other 15’s.

13 inch = dual core
15 in retina = quad core (more processes faster rendering) = time saving.

13 inch intel graphics
15 inch retina nVidia graphics = may support CUDA (unknown) = speed in After Effects 3D and many effects.

13 inch 2.96 pounds = lighter
15 inch 4.46 pounds

Unknown, how soon After Effects will have a retina version. Since the UI in After Effects has been developed for lower resolution displays, the current version will appear to have very tiny UI elements (buttons, text widgets). It will likely be possible to change the resolution on the retina display to 1440 x 900 until there’s a retina update to After Effects though this is yet to be confirmed by Apple.

If you have the budget and can lug 4.46 pounds (still a pound lighter than the other 15in) go for the retina.

How odd. Have you tried resetting After Effects preferences?

I suspect something other lack of RAM is the issue.

I have no trouble rendering with many lights on my MBP i7 also with 16 GB, nor on my MBP Core 2 with 8GB of RAM.

Its slow but not 25 hours. Check your Comps, what else have is going on, effects, dimension of footage, dimensions of final render, output module etc.

I’m pretty certain it isn’t the lights.

I had mine set to use 7 processors allocating 3GB to each.

I looked at Activity Monitor during the render, RAM was freed quickly and reallocated. Cache was set to 40 GB on a RAID 0 (2 x 1TB 7200 rpm drives).

After Effects is not a real-time editing application. To play the audio file you’ll need to do one of the following: RAM preview, or Preview Audio (press the period key on the numeric keypad) or from the menu
Composition>Preview> Audio.

You can alter the Log settings which will produce a text file showing how long it took to render each frame etc which may indicate where the bottlenecks are.

From After Effects Help:

“You can choose how much information After Effects writes to a render log file. If you choose Errors Only, After Effects only creates the file if errors are encountered during rendering. If you choose Plus Settings, a log file is created that lists the current render settings. If you choose Plus Per Frame Info, a log file is created that lists the current render settings and information about the rendering of each frame. When a log file has been written, the path to the log file appears under the Render Settings heading and Log menu.”

Its very difficult to determine the issue with such little detail.

Could you post a screen shot of the Form Effects Control panel with all the settings you’ve used?

Base Form, size etc.
