I agree with Matt
If your asking this question and your looking at a Shure SM57 for a VO mic then you really need to do some research on the art of noise.some quick answer’s for a mic and software are.
Neumann mics take a look (pricey)
Shure mics look at some others like the KSM series. (better price for low budget)
and there’s a bunch more of other mics that are great out there.Software
Take a look at Protools LE for yourself with the Digi002 is what I like for low budget. Mackie don’t go down that road (I personally don’t like any of there stuff!)Hope this helps you out.

Well if your looking at renting equipment you might look into a camera that has 4 audio inputs on it to help make the day go a little easier for the audio person.
If your going to rent a camera with this scenario then get two of the same. It will help out with continuity in the edit.
You can easily apply the same color correction and what ever other effects you go with in post.OK OK back to audio.
If you stay with the two camera’s you have and want to just rent some audio equipment. Then take a look at a good mixer Sound Devices 444 would be great (4 in’s / 2 outs).
and run the two outs to one of the cameras. With that you will definately need someone to monitor the outputs of the mixer and camera, since you will be married to the live mix to the camera.Hope this helps out I could go on and on but I’ll save your time form that.

What software are you using?
Are you mastering the tracks yourself?

September 13, 2005 at 11:14 pm in reply to: Recording sound for Short Film & Voice Overs with Mbox and Rode NT2 mic on WinXPLooks like you’ve done some reading by going with ProTools.
One suggestion though if you plan on doing some production audio with that Rode mic I would shy away from it. For VO it’ll be fine.If you need to do production go with a shotgun.
examples
cheap!
AT4073
Shure SM89
Sennhieser ME-66
those three are pretty decesent low-budget mics. But of coarse you get what you pay for. If you want a great mic go with the industry standard Sennhieser MKH416 ($1500 + -)Good luck with your films.
by the way how is the Melborne Film Festival me and some friends are sending out shorts to the festival curcuit and would like to know about that festival?Brian B

Yes it is an RTAS so ProTools 6.4 will show it up.
I’ve never used that plug-in before to let you know if its good or not. But please post your results because i’m intereested in purchasing it too.Brian B

That mixer is above entry level
and the industry standard for shotgun mics is the Sennhieser MKH416
+ or – $1200.I’ve never used the AT4073 before just some cheaper of the AT’s and I didn’t like them at all!
If your doing a big important project and don’t have the money to buy the 416 then try renting one out. You’ll be happier with the result in the end!

Sounds like a fun trip.
Shotgun I’d suggest a Schoeps CMC641, or Sennhieser MKH416 or MKH60.
I’d assume you have some money doing a doc like that.As for a lav I couldn’t tell you a specific one.
I would definately suggest a good zeplin with a dead cat (wind sock)
it’s probably going to get a little windy at 17,000 feet.Lav though put it under some garments of the talent to help block the wind.
(figure you allready know that though)Hope you come back in one piece, don’t forget your board you can have a fun ride on the way down!

Now this is a very interesting question.
Audio Professionals in the past were always tring to make a recording sound like the real thing or make it sound like something you’ve never heard before.
I think currently with digital that people are creating sounds and are not tring to duplicate nature they are tring to create a totally new creation.
of coarse depending on the project. If your working on “The Matrix” you want something new.
If your working on “Open Range” you want a more natural sound. But for some reason gun shots are different. They always have to be bigger sounding and bassier than the real thing.
Now adays we can create at the speed of thought. I beleive it is in human nature to create and that will wander to and from nature.
So, as for your son. This opens a new question.
Children and Adults now adays get to “lost” into media they believe it is real when in most cases it is very far from “real”.Everyone must question what they see on TV, hear on the Radio, or even what they hear talking to anyone. For example your local nightly news the quote “if it Bleeds it Leads” is very true if there was some sort of violence in your local community it is always at the top of the news broadcast. And always keep in mind that the GM’s pocket book prevails over what story will be on the air that night.
Well that was fun!
