I’ve never heard of anyone upconverting from SD to HD. Wouldn’t that look like junk? It’s the equivalent of upconverting a 320×240 web movie to SD. Plus you mentioned it’s anamorphic, which means you’re going to blow it up even more to a16:9 ratio instead of having a 4:3 with black bars on the left and right.

Edit to tape edits whatever is in the viewer onto your tape. Is your sequence in the viewer, or is in open, in the canvas and timeline? If it’s open in the timeline, then drag it from the bin or project window to the viewer window.
Your error is very common when someone is trying to edit to tape with nothing in the viewer but a black slug, which is not DV compression. That’s what the error is telling you – that the black in the viewer is not the right format to output to DV.

My bad. Thought I had discovered something new to me. It is just telling me the duration of the clip I’m hovering over when I right click. Even though multiple clips are highlighted. Never mind! 🙂

It’s even easier than that. Just draw a marquee around them to highlight them and then right click. I’ll tell you right there.

Choose your system drive for the waveform (which is the audiowaveform drawing if you use it) and the thumbnail cache (which is, well, thumbnails). The default setting is just fine and dandy.
Choose a different drive for your media. Media is media is media, no matter if it’s created via rendering or capturing, so most people put them all in the same place. Don’t put any of it on your system drive for best performance. Although for DV, you can get away with it in a pinch if you just need to grab a shot or two or render something and you’re out of room on your media drives.

Well if you’re really wanting it to go straight to the timeline, and it’s not a delicate insert or overwrite edit, but instead lots of edits, just digitize them in order (and label 1,2,3,4, etc.) and then drag them all to the timeline or to the canvas where you could actually add transitions at the same time.
It’s a neat avid feature, but certainly not a deal breaker.

Create a bunch of new bins in a window as tabs. The just tab, drag. Tab, drag. All my bins are always in one big window as tabs.

I hate to be the one to say it, but Avid can. For about 7 years now. Insert or overwrite. It’s one awesome feature that would be a nice addition to fcp. Very simple implementation. In the capture window there’s an overwrite and insert button. If you have that engaged, when you capture a clip in goes into a bin and into the timeline just like a regular 3 point edit.

Go to Apple and see if you can find the latest compressor update and run it again. Or check your software update.
