What do you men by highly technical? I don’t think of FCP as very technical at all. The computer system may get technical, and general video components can be technical, but I don’t think of FCP itself as technical.

I was a little confused because you also said you’re not getting audio on playback. But I guess you misspoke or I misunderstood. Maybe that’s why nobody else said it was shift+s. Glad that worked.

Almost always due to some hardware glitch. Like a firewire connection. But it could’ve just been your spelling of kernel. Kernel. It hates it when people spell it’s name wrong.
I think kernels are some of the basic coding units of the underlying unix. I’m not sure why it’s called a panic. Maybe because before apple made the nice little screen telling you you’re dead in the water, you used to get a bunch of code fly up across the screen. Panic?

No, I’ve never heard that in my life. But why don’t you try pressing shift+s. That turns scrubbing on/off. Is that all you’re asking? Surely it’s not that simple, with it being right there in the menus and all. But maybe that’s all it is.

Why not just put a single frame of tone?

If the frame is on the top, and there’s not a frame to the right of it, then you cant’ define it’s width. Frames fill the entire space. Just like a web page does. For example, if you have a frameless page, it will always fill the page. You can not define a web page’s width or height. You can place a table in a page and define the width or height of that. Sounds like that’s all you need to do with the top frame.
With that in mind, your description of your page’s frames sounded odd. Top, left, center. Don’t you mean top, left, right? In that situation you could define the height of the top frame, and the width of either the left or right frame.

Go to the frame view in GoLive. Click on that frame and set it to a specific height. Then set it not to resize. If I remember right it should all be in the inspector pallette.

You’d probably be best off with utilizing the “instant” sites created by one of the online systems at register.com. All in one your register your name, pick a site/template, and fill in info and change parameters, etc.
You could use something like frontpage from microsoft, but they do things in such a microsoft backwards sort of way that when you’re ready to move up to real web design, you’ll be a mess.
Plus, there’s the concept of good design. The templates of online systmes like register.com are going to be somewhat basic, but follow good design typography, colors, and principles. When you jump into new software, you’ll be trying for the longest time just accomplish and learn to upload someting vs. make it pretty or “spiffy.”
The web has come along way and the bar for a spiffy website is higher and higher. WYSIWYG software just can’t keep up. You have to learn some html, scripting and programming. To do that, you’ll need a higher end app like Dreamweaver or GoLive (which I predict will disappear in the next year) and both of those had steep learning curves.
So, if your company needs something now, go with some sort of online template and get a nice presence out there. If you just want to goof around with something that doesn’t matter, go with frontpage. If you know you’d like to dig in deep, get dreamweaver and start learning the basics of html. Then some php, apache, unix, etc.

Are your sequence settings DV? Because the High, Medium, Low does not affect playback quality. Only render quality. To play out firwire at any resolution other than full DV would actually require more processing power to alter the image to a lower quality and then pump it back up to a DV stream for the camera or deck. So it seems to me that EVERYTHING in your timeline is requiring a render, and your machine IS too slow for high quality RT specs. Yes, a dual 500 is considered a 500 by FCP as far as determining your RT capabilities. An 867 is considered better.
Does your timeline have any color bars across the top. Green, orange, blue, red, etc. You shouldn’t see any color bars except on portions that require rendering.
If you render your entire timeline, do the color bars go away and does playback occur at full quality on your NTSC monitor?
