It does kinda make the argument that one needs to be somewhat of an engineer to be an editor as well. If you have hooked up decks and suites in the analog world this is kind of an easy one. Plugging a cable or two directly from the card to monitor or trying a different output from the card, checking termination, etc. is a pretty quick one to diagnose. Especially a termination issue. But hard to debug or describe over the internet.

HUH??? SD does not apply to any DV formats. SD applies to the resolution of the image. SD is specifically the 720×486 spec. 2 specs, SD (720×486) and DV (720×480). HD is of course another beast and has lots of specs of it’s own.
AE and Photoshop reflect the same specs.
That said, everything that comes out an analog port has 486 lines. The DV spec only applies to the digital specification. Pretty much if you were to digitize off the component or SDI output of a DV based deck, you’re now working in Standard Def, because you would utilize a SD composition to accompany the SD signal. When DV is played out an analog or SDI port it adds 6 empty lines to the signal. Those lines are simply hidden by the overscan.

UVW, PVW, or BVW beta? Sounds like a termination or deck issue. Maybe a component connector for the y-r cable.
Termination is adding resistance at the end of a signal. Many machines have a switch to turn on termination, some older ones require putting a terminator on the output of the machine.
But sounds to me like a cable, deck, or monitor issue. Especially since it looks ok when you “giggle” the switch.

I find the quickest thing to do is to grab the transparency line and drag it down then back up, forcing a rerender/refresh. Otherwise it just links to the old render file, except for where rerendering is needed, like on a dissolve, as you discovered.

While cracked copies are operational, FCP does silently login to Apple whenever possible with the product ID. Software update on your Mac does as well. Apple’s pretty diligent about keeping track of your ip and following up with your internet service provider whenever it comes across suspect IDs or the same ID logged in at the same time. This interaction might have screwed up your prefs. I wouldn’t connect to the internet for awhile. And I’d definitely dump the copy of FCP and all related prefs files, etc. so there’s no evidence of it on your system. A full reinstall of your OS wouldn’t be a bad idea either at this point. In fact, you might want to just go ahead and buy a Dell or a HP just to be safe.

Unless of course you’re talking abut alpha channel based media. Unless 5 has changed, fcp still doesn’t hadle cross dissolves correctly.

I don’t need to read the links. I can do basic math. And I’ve NEVER heard the specs Tom mentioned. They in fact, don’t add up. They’re incorrect.
