I use roughly the same process for sorensen 3. But use 15fps (you didn’t specify) which cuts the size in half) and I use 320×240, which to me looks sharper because it’s essentially removing every other pixel, instead of interpolating to 400 pixels. It’s also smaller in file size. I also use mp3 as the audio compression, and frequently make it mono or 32khz to make it smaller.
Yields file sizes much smaller, and very acceptable quality. About 1.5 megs per 30 seconds. Smaller frame size, and smaller frame rate are key for me.
But I really like the h264 stuff. But yeah, many people may not have latest qt. But the compressor setting for 300mega bits a sec (my above example was 500mb/sec) looks even better. I had been using cleaner for creating, but soon enough h264 will be ok and I can just switch to compressor.

I feel your method can be tedious, especially if you use iTunes for ipod and it’s intended use. For example, you have to go into prefs and switch encoders from aac to aif, then change it back when you’re done. If you forget those steps, you risk filling up your drive with aif files the next time you think you’re ripping for your ipod.
Plus, my other annoyance is where it saves the files. When I use iTunes for FCP I always change the destination to my project folder or the media drives. I undoubtedly forget to change it back. Then the next person doesn’t mount the drive, iTunes thinks songs are missing, etc. It’s just messy.
Now, if all you use iTunes for is a music library for your editing business, I think it can work great. Set it up, label the songs correctly if they can’t be found on the internet, and you’re good to go.
However if you back up your media after a project, those files might be missed. With my method, I always keep them on the media drive in a expressly marked folder. Also, with my method, if you need to relink a project, all you need is the 44.1 file off the CD to relink. Not the iTunes created file.
And you have to admit, there is little chance of user error. Truthfully, FCP doesn’t even need the 48khz file I generally let it do the conversion on the fly. It’s been doing fine with 44.1 and 32khz on the fly since version 1. It’s just a real time audio effect. I do the item level render if there’s any problem. But since dual g4s I’ve yet to see a problem. That’s what I use. And with the G5s I work on, forget it. Just use the 44.1 off the CD, then do a mixdown before output.

Well, I have no idea what you’re talking about. But I made it happen somehow anyway. Great little piece of code to add to the arsenal.
You had an extra closing parenthesis, and I had to figure out how to add parentheses when I added he dirname in front of what you had. The link to the php manual helped me get it.

Well, I don’t speak PHP but I can understand it I think. But I think my issue might be more complex than your example. I’m looking for a way to highlight the horizontal main menu links. So it has to look for a particular directory, not a specific page. To use the retail page as an example, the link is simply /retail. Which takes you to index.php. But I want it highlighted for all the pages in the retail section.
The links on the left already have this function because of the extension I purchased which creates the twirl down menus.
In the example you give, it seems that this is how it works… (the class I use is “biglinks”)
class=”biglinks(then you insert the script here that says if the current page is so and so then print “ON,” otherwise, then print “” (nothing). That I understand. The script is filling in the end of the class with either ON or nothing, which will determine it’s appearance. Exactly what I looking to do. What I don’t understand is the $_SERVER[‘SCRIPT_NAME’] part. Is that a built in function, or am I to call on a script that will determine the page or directory I’m viewing?

Ditto. And if you have the CD, just copy the files onto your media drive and use ’em directly. Drop them in a sequence and do an “item level” render on them. That’ll convert them to your sequence setting for you using the same process that either QT or iTunes would (qt engine).

Darn. Was hoping I was missing something. Good info on active. Yeah, useless. I uually call that the “down” state so I didn’t pick up on “active” meaning that.
On the JS, I know how it’s done, but haven’t been able to find a simple script for it. Is there a simple line of javascript that can be added to each menu item? I can handle adding the CSS no problem.

The menus on the left do what you’re describing, but I don’t know enough javascript to decipher how they do it. It’s a DW script extension. I can of course change their CSS styles.
I can use the same extension to create horizontal menus, but I don’t need the pull downs, and I’ve already got the CSS how I want it, etc.

I can’t think of a machine that’s worked harder or taken more abuse than a store display. But I guess if it’s got a warranty. You should be replacing it soon enough anyhow I’ll bet.

Go to the prefs. Advanced. Import. Change it to aif. Set the custom import settings to 48k, 16bit, stereo. Set the import folder to someplace easy like the desktop.
Go back to itunes library window, highlight song, select advanced, convert to aiff.
Go back to prefs and change settings back to aac, etc. for ipod use.
It’s all a real pain in the butt.

Whoa, not if it’s a FW 400, or even 800 drive. An internal ATA is much faster than the FW400 external, and an internal SATA is way faster. It’s even a little faster than the FW 800 external.
