I don’t see any artifacts my self. I’d say keep the clip at 100%. Stretch it horizontally to fit the 720, but don’t scale it up. That’ll leave it letterboxed if that’s ok.

Other than that, how do you remove artifacts… blur. But then, it’s blurry. 😛 Maybe someone has a better idea for that.

On your monitor you are rendering to DV (8 bit, 5:1 compression, 4.1.1 color. You’re going to get bad banding on gradients. If you render to a 10 bit QT and don’t see the banding in the QT you should be fine. But there’s no way to view 10 bit through DV to a TV.

If you want to keep a version of the exported clip it’s a little more elegant to just turn that clip off (clip enable) in the timeline and leave it in place. Place the new clip above or below after reimporting.

February 19, 2007 at 8:13 am in reply to: FCP HD Studio and FCP HD 4.5 the same no?

Which brings us to the bottom line. FCP 4.5 cannot play DVCProHD format. It’s specs are for QT 6 as well. So whatever version it was digitized in (most likely FCP 5, which does not have the HD moniker, only 4.5 does) it can’t be used in 4.5 correctly if at all.

  • ARE you scaling it? You mentined BEST which is one part of the export setting in After effects but you also need to choose FULL which determines exactly what you’re talking about. The resolution. Otherwise it is rendered at a lower rez and scaled up.

You should be using the Animation codec, Millions+, Straight alpha matte.

I don’t know about the whole PAL thing and widescreen, but seems like you should be working in a setting that exactly mathces your sequence. If you’re working in anamorphic 720×576 then you should work in anamorphic 720×576 but perhaps your widescreen setting is correct. I don’t do PAL or widescreen.

Both take up the same amount of space and are the same setting. DV-NTSC. There is a DVCPro PAL setting if you’re not NTSC. Otherwise, use DV-NTSC, whch covers all the DV25 formats – DVCam, DVCPro, and DV.

Instead of a green overlay, actually place the element you want there. No need to be green screening anything.

    It’s this https://www.avid.com/products/newscutter/

It has accelated digitizing and output. I’ve seen it at a local station here digitizing at faster than real time on a tour. Pretty cool. I also saw reporters editing their stories with a set of headphones at a terminal in their cubicle. So there was one digitizing station, where tapes were completely being loaded in and archived, and the reporters could do rough edits at their desk, just by logging in soemehow.

FCP isn’t that specific yet. Certainly can be done of course.

32k is pretty decent. I can’t really tell much difference if any. I mean that’s the thing with final output. Web videos or itunes songs, etc. can be highly compressed. DVD audio is highly compressed. Sounds good. But, however the tape he’s making at 32k might not be the end of the line. It might be the source for more editing, or maybe the master for broadcast which will be compressed to mpeg2. So yeah, while it sounds good, we do need the whole story.

However, if you need 4 channel audio in DV25 format, that’s the only option you’ve got.

Ok, first off, DSR-11 absolutely CAN record 4 channels of audio when set at 32khz. Second, it sounds pretty good. You probably can’t tell the difference. It arguably sounds better than a hissy analog betacam track imho. I wouldn’t go dubbing down multi generations at 32khz, but as a final product, it’s not too bad. And for an emergency split mix master, not a bad idea at all.

The audio quality will have much more to do with the original audio quality. How good a mic it was, how it was recorded, etc.

The DSR-11 can only monitor 2 tracks of audio at a time. But you can record to all 4 32khz tracks.

1st-Put the deck in 32khz mode.
2nd – open FCPs audio visual settings, go to the a/v devices tab, under audio options change the channels to 4. It’ll change to 12 bit 32khz automatically.
3rd – in the current sequence’s settings, change the audio outputs to 4, dual mono.
4th – in the audio mixer you should see 4 audio meters instead of two now. At the left of the audio mixer where all the tracks are listed, right click on each track and choose the audio output for each track

You should be good to go.
