Looks like you have show audio lanes turned on in the roles portion or the timeline index, separating the audio and video (they’re clearly separated) similar to expanding audio. It’s just not so obvious with one layer.

Worked for me just the other day with interesting results. Now you have a shot with the foreground object locked off solid, but the background is somehow magically moving around behind it!

Except for the stabilization mode specifically called “tripod.” 🙂

Did you trim off the ends of your clips so that there is clip media beyond the edges?

  • For me it’s undoubtedly not about the magnetic timeline. Although as someone that often has 20+ layers, I’ve got to say, for the compositing/motion graphics work it’s extremely efficient in that you can move layers around vertically and others get out of the way. Just like a compositing app like AE or Motion. I can take or leave the full time ripple. It has no appreciable benefit for me.

It’s really all about the connection between FCPX and Motion. If one isn’t taking advantage of that, then they’re really missing out. It’s has really increased productivity. Especially when changes roll around. Nearly every graphic I make, just like the ones I used to do in AE, is now a plugin. No more rendering out and replacing. It’s all interactive. And it used to be producers would rough cut projects, or maybe we have a team working on a big project, and I’d do the finishing, but now I supply them all with the tools (custom plugins) to do the finishing themselves with a consistent look.

I’ll often get into lots of detail in the email diatribe back and forth for that very reason. There’s an electronic trail. But sometimes they get frustrated and the phone rings.

  • All very good points. So what do you think of the second video on the page addressing actually doing it the same way by making compounds?

The only real method of getting a sequence from X to AE would be XimportAE from Automatic Duck. https://www.automaticduck.com/#ximport-ae

OR translating a FCPXML file to an old school XML that AE supports with XtoCC https://intelligentassistance.com/xtocc.html

The former is a bit more feature rich and if I remember correctly has some clip trimming options, whereas the latter is good for basic media and transforms, but no trimming. Either is going to preserve quality just fine.

Using Automatic Duck’s SendtoMotion gives you roundtrip capability if you publish the resulting motion project as a generator in FCP X. Apple has hired Wes Plate from Automatic Duck recently, presumably to help incorporate a better round trip workflow directly into FCP X. But maybe they hired him to getter get Premiere projects into X. ☺

The only way back from AE to X is to render out a file and import. Shouldn’t be any quality issues there either.

  • A neat article from a year or two ago pointing out that we’re kind of already pancaking in FCPX when we create keyword collections. https://fcpxpert.net/2016/02/15/pancakes-shmancakes-premiere-vs-fcp-x/

Call it browser pancaking or something but it’s pretty functionally the same. I think now with smart collections, the technique could be updated further to only show only unused clips, dynamically removing used clips from your view, where in normal pancaking you have to remove them from the cake if that is your goal. It also seems that the Premiere pancake method involves a lot of dragging whilst this FCP X pancake method utilizes the same shortcuts as normal editing.

But if that doesn’t work for you, you can still do a stringout in a compound clip. There’s a second video there pointing out pretty handily how compounds are superior to Premiere nests.

I’m no pancake expert, but it seems like the functionality of either method is pretty close. Add in X’s arguably superior metadata and I think it’s a fair fight.

You didn’t answer if your timeline is set to best quality or best performance. Additionally, moire is a fields problem, or a scaling problem. You can set the FCPX canvas to show both fields or not. Plus you may see a moire pattern if you’re not viewing at 100%.
