For a 3 Cam shoot, I would use a crane, steady cam or glide cam, and tripod for wide stage shot from the back.
Gym’s have the absolute worst audio, so if she is singing to a track, you should be able to mix the audio from a pre-recorded track and a crowd mic. If there is a local small concert venue, such as a cultural center, or other sound worthy spot, maybe you can convince them to switch. Again, if you can use the actual soundtrack, then it doesn’t really matter. Venue looks and lighting will then be more important. Also, if you have any say on the lighting, keep them all on and tell them no flashing light show, it’ll kill your cam settings.
Hope this helps a little.

Always copy the complete BPAV folder onto your hard drive. Do not take out anything, otherwise the file and transfer will not work.

Did you use a slate in your production? This can help you in synching and also by labeling your slate, you can save some confusion later if you ever need to go back a year or more down the road.
As far as being nervous, just be redundant in archiving your files and organize them in some written label. I always get two hard drives and save duplicates of my master DSLR folder. Just drag the folders onto the drive and duplicate that to the other drive when you get finished organizing and labeling.
Once you do your File and Transfer you will have another LARGER file in Pro-Res. If you have the space, it’s also good to back the Pro-Res file up in case you have to go back and re-link your files. If not, there are ways to re-link from your DSLR folder, but that’s another forum issue.

Your other option, BH Video & Armato both sell used gear. You can find a lot of HD Cams that use tape for a big discount.

April 22, 2010 at 6:04 pm in reply to: What setting to shoot a marathon race ?progressive or interlacedHere are two sports shoots I did with the Sony EX-1, 30P, 60.
I thought about shooting 30i, but stuck to 30P. It is hard to see everything online, but overall, I was happy with it. The BMX Racing is really fast moving, so it was more challenging with camera whipping. I also had some overexposure since I had a camera shooting directly to the starting gate into the sun.
I would never use a film rate 24P for sports.

I have both the 7D & 5D. The 7D will also overheat. Your limited by both with 12 minute clips. 5D full sensor is nice and the new upgraded firmware now give you audio control and proper frame rates.
Do the math on all the lenses, audio accessories, etc that you will need with both. Then go buy the Sony EX-1R. A true video cam used in broadcast and film production. It may sound more expensive, but add up all the stuff you will need with your choices and it’s the same price or less.
A lot of film schools have chosen the EX-1 or EX-3. Next year you will see the hybrid Video cam’s with DSLR lens & sensors. Panasonic and Sony have both shown a preview at NAB.
Then you can buy a 7D later as a 2nd cam. I would Never have these as my main and only camera. There are also rolling shutter issues with both.

Next time, have your shooter’s create a folder and drag the entire 7D Card into it so you will have an image. There is also a way to create an image of your CF Card. That way all of the files are there and you don’t have to go back and re-create all the links.

April 22, 2010 at 4:29 pm in reply to: Thoughts on EX1 as main camera and the 5D mark2 as second cam?I also shoot with the EX 1, 7D, & 5D. I’m actually amazed at just how compatible color wise this cameras are. Yes, there will be subtle differences, but as you use them more, you’ll be able to set you cam’s to match even more.
The EX-1 is a great cam. Get at least one 32G SxS adapter and a SD card adapter to give you additional cards at a much cheaper cost.
The 7D does have overheating issues, which arise when shooting in the heat. Both Cam’s only record 12 minute clips. Hopefully they will make a firmware update to allow longer recording, but the Sensor’s may not be able to handle the additional workload.

Aside from a switcher, I keep a low tech, low budget solution in my bag as a backup for just such hiccups. Go to radio shack and buy a media switcher that hooks up all of your stereo gear.
It’s about $20 – $70 and all you do is press buttons to switch. It does have a bit of flash between image sources, but it will save your but at a live event in case you have in issues like the one you had.
Always, always, have a backup plan. This is a cheap save your butt solution.

If your doing a local band, chances are they don’t have a big budget. I typically approach them with a range of production estimates and try to get them to set a budget and then develop the project based on that budget.
If they only have a budget for one or two cameras, then you have to explain that they won’t be getting the big budget concert edit or MTV style final video.
