For a tape based cam for 3 grand. Canon Xh-A1

Panasonic has a great AVCHD cam that records to SD cards and genlocks
    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/575992-REG/Panasonic_AG_HMC150PJU_AG_HMC150_AVCCAM_Camcorder.html

I would never, ever, use a DSLR for my main cam. Too many issues and lack of controls. You need to get a video camera. Also, you may think your saving money, but factor in the cost of lens, audio recorder, etc… and you could have purchased a nice video cam.

When I bought my Canon 5D, I ended up with over 5 Grand in it after just buying two lenses, extra battery, audio accessories, etc.

If you want a work horse that will give you the best of all these, then get a Sony Ex-1, the standard in broadcast & television. (and ex3) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/656719-REG/Sony_PMW_EX1R_PMW_EX1R_XDCAM_EX_Full.html

SandDisc makes the SxS cards for Sony and now a Class 10 Extreme especially made for the demands of HD Video.

    Here’s the link to NewEgg.

If your a professional, I would definetly get a class 10. This is the newest and fastest writing cards that will give you the least problems.

As far as the Transcend. I have 5 of them and issues will all of them when recording long events. They can’t handle the long recording. My cards are class 6. I’ve also had media errors with transcend. They used to be reliable, but now it seems the new batch isn’t performing well.

Maybe buy one SandDisc class 10 and 1 elcheapo transcend class 6.

Do you have a budget in mind?

For $200, the Flipcam HD does an amazing job as a consumer cam. Recordeds onto SD cards. Kodak also has an HD cam. I don’t know how well they handle lowlight in recitals. Most stores will take returns in 7 days.

Premier Elements for under $100 will handle AVHCD formats.

Canon also have some great cameras in the $700 – $1200 range.

Again, this is for consumer. Staying with media cards should help your camera to last longer than tape based consumer cams.

  • If you have the budget, get the 5D. Full sensor, new upgraded firmware gives you audio control, 24p, etc.

Wow, I would fire the Nikon CEO. He has no vision and has told the world, “I give up.” Sounds like they need new leadership.

Yes, this is what is to come. Except I think canon & sony should be able to come up with a better design.

The new Hybrid is basically going to take the DSLR and put it into a video camera with all the controls you have on your current video cam, while allowing you to use all the cool lenses to give you that depth of field we have always wanted.

I think Canona can take the full sensor in the 5D, slap a heat sink on it and make it do-able in a regular video cam setup. The big issue with DSLR is long form recording and all day shoots. The sensors really heat up when shooting full HD vs stills. This will also do away with the limited 12 minute recording length on current DSLR cams.

  • You can use an external audio recorder and input a line into the camera. This will give you a separate audio with better quality.

I wouldn’t rely on this. If you are a professional, you need to step up and spend the cash. On the lower end Canon XH-A1, on the higher end Sony EX-1.

Buying a DSLR isn’t really cost effective when you add up all the excessories, Lens, extra batteries, media cards. You’ll need 2-3 lenses in your bag. Separate audio device, etc.

May 1, 2010 at 4:10 am in reply to: Canon 7D vs EX3 with Lense Adapter

I have the EX 1, 7D, & 5D. Like Noah said, don’t waste money on a lens adaptor.

Why not the 5D? It has a full sensor and the new firmware upgrade now allows you to shoot in 24P & monitor audio. The 7D has had overheating issues, but a just released firmware will help some with that issue. But, if your shooting a full day, it may cause you problems.

The 5D is much better in low light for your night scenes. The full sensor makes your images pop that much more.

Use your EX3 for the wide shots & during scenes where you don’t want too much bokeh. Sometimes the Depth of Field can get overused, so using both cameras will give you a nice mix of shots to enhance your dialogue.

    Clint:

I was asking how to see which version my camera is currently before I upgrade, so I don’t brick my camera. Yes, I do see where I have to take the screw out for the other USB.

In the brief discription, it said to see which version your camera is, go to your menu, & then other, & select “version” to see what current version your camera has installed. I don’t see “version” listed in any of the “other” menus.

  • Chandler:

    I use Doug Jensen’s preset. I don’t use a preset on the 5D or 7D yet.
Doug produced the video that was included in Sony’s rebate by Vortex Media. You can also search for Vortex Media and find the settings online.

It’s still not perfect, but pretty close.

I have a century. Be careful, they scratch easily. It also ended up with a fingerprint INSIDE the lens? Now how that happened is a surprise to me. I think I just didn’t catch it early enough to return it. It doesn’t show up on the video.
