What kind of shooting do you do? If you shoot high speed, such as sporting events, 60i or 30P, If you shoot weddings where you have a lot of slow motion in your editing, 30P, (24P doesn’t look as good in slo-mo).

24P gives you more of a film look with less frames. It has that film stutter (not the best word to describe it).

If you have a lot of panning, 24P doesn’t do so well as the higher film speed of 30P or 60i.

If you don’t deal with PAL, then I would narrow down your choices to 60i, 30P, 24P. Practice shooting a mixture of scenes repeating the same shots with each frame rate. Give yourself verbal cues on the frame rate or with a slate at the start of each shot. Then make the same edit with all 3 frame rates. This will give you a good understanding on how each look differs.

If you need to save space, then choose the smaller size HD.

  • I have a degree in Industrial Arts. I keep telling myself I’m going to make some custom gear….6 months later, I’ve purchased someone else’s sweat labor. Maybe after I retire, I can break out the old tools and start making the big bucks charging you guys a bunch of money.

  • I actually know someone who shot a wedding using nothing but his cell phone. This was arranged ahead of time and I don’t know how much he charged, but he did this to make a point. It’s about the story. He wanted to prove that he could produce an amazing video with minimal technology. It actually turned out to be an incredible piece.

Of course, try telling you client you charged 10 Grand that this is how it’s done! He didn’t do it ever again. It was just to prove a point.

I use the glidecam with the X-10 also for the EX1, but when I’m on the 5D or 7D I don’t need to use the vest. I can hand hold the 5D / 7D for a long time with no problems. The EX-1, wear’s me out even with the vest…(I’m not getting any younger).

I get a headache just trying to watch 3D. I guess I’ll have a Migraine trying to shoot and then edit. How do they edit this footage anyway?

May 1, 2010 at 5:16 am in reply to: ProRes 422 project is half a terabyte!

If you really want to archive, you should be archiving the original file format from your cameras before you transcode them. I also do a lot of weddings. I archive my original footage which might be 32 gig for around 2 hrs of footage vs. 120 gig for the proRes version.

Then at least you can go and get it if necessary, while charging the client for the additional time.

Also, my contract gives them 7 days to contact me if any changes need to be made after I deliver the final product. Anything after that can be done for an hourly rate.
