I see no glaring issues, but you might consider the AMD 4400+ instead of the 4200+ model. Most people haven’t noticed, but the 4400+ is a “sweet spot” in the X2 lineup because it has 1MB L2 cache whereas almost all of the others have 512k L2 until you get way higher in pricing.

For anyone who doesn’t know what L2 cache does, it minimizes data bottlenecks at the processor. Data is passed from the processor to your RAM through the L2 cache, which is a special type of RAM (static RAM) that is much faster and more efficient than physical RAM (dynamic RAM) and acts as a conduit. The larger the L2 size, the smoother and faster data will flow. 512k L2 can handle the cache for a mere 128MB of physical RAM, so upping that wherever possible will increase performance more than a few extra Mhz in processor speed will.

Early-to-mid July. If not, I’ll eat this post….

Given that both choices include a Quadro card, either will do great.

A faster processor is more important to AE than graphics card, and any 3D app will be quite happy with either of the Quadro models you mentioned. Go with the faster processor option.

Those are the two most common for After Effects use.

The only other particle systems I use are those included in 3D apps such as Maya. Ultimately 3D apps offer the best control and options, so if you have one available that might be your best bet.

Particle Illusion is great, but it is a stand-alone app. Particular, while less powerful overall than PIllusion, is very capable, offers a great degree of control for a plugin and has an attractive price point.

  • Agreed. Blackmagic card (the $295 standard version should do fine) plus any broadcast monitor that has Component BNC inputs is your best option. Search B&H Video for good monitor options @ http://www.bhphotovideo.com.

Without a professional grade monitor and a high-quality signal path (i.e. component video or better) you will never know for sure whether your colors are correct.

Make sure you have the latest (and correct) driver for your video card. Even if you have OpenGL disabled driver problems WILL generate unspecified drawing errors and the like.

Like the other poster mentioned, Vista might be your problem as well.

Please post your complete system specs, without that it will be hard to help.

Generally speaking, a modern USB 2.0 external drive should give you about, I believe, 60MB per second. Therefore you are suffering from something pretty odd. Given how many drives you’ve tried it is most likely the computer itself. Specs will help us troubleshoot further.

The best way to export Meridien for Avid is to NOT use 601. Leave it RGB, and Avid should automatically interpret it correctly.

For now do what the above poster suggests – have the editor switch it in the Avid.

Adobe After Effects is most commonly used. Some animated graphics are creating using 3D programs like Maya.

By the way, this really should be posted in the After Effects Basics forum, but hopefully no sleep will be lost over it.
