What is a good HDD read speed when using AE?
Hi there,
Basically ive been going through external hard drives like anything trying to find a good and fast one but it seems so hard! i bought an eSATA one and used a PCI eSATA card with it but there was loads of problems so then I bought a firewire drive and used a PCI firewire card with it but AGAIN there were problems with read speeds of only like 8meg/sec.
So now i have the WD My Book on USB 2.0 getting about 15meg/sec and the WD Elements on about 20meg/sec. i was gonna stick with the my book just cause i wasnt sure how good the elements is….but basically is around 15-20meg a sec good when using them for AE work? i really wish i could get eSATA or firewire to work properly but havent got a clue!
Any tips would be much appreciated!

its hard to help troubleshoot these issues without knowing anything about your system…
sata and sata2 should give you excellent data rates for single drives and raid0. you should be able to find reviews and comparisons for various host adapters and drive setups for a variety of manufacturers online.
if you want to be safe, try using a drive enclosure and host adapter from the same manufacturer, and use a drive either supplied or recommended by that manufacturer. that way you can ensure that the setup has been tested and approved together.

Please post your complete system specs, without that it will be hard to help.
Generally speaking, a modern USB 2.0 external drive should give you about, I believe, 60MB per second. Therefore you are suffering from something pretty odd. Given how many drives you’ve tried it is most likely the computer itself. Specs will help us troubleshoot further.
