November 6, 2008 at 4:16 am in reply to: MiniDV Tape TimecodeAbsolutely no need to pre-stripe a tape prior to being recorded in a camcorder.
But, it has nothing to do with “re-using” the tape (which would not be a problem, anyway.)A camcorder will completely erase any TC already on the tape, so it
won’t matter if the tape is striped.Just be careful not to let the TC “reset” when you are recording the tape.

November 2, 2008 at 10:19 pm in reply to: audio sync issues with camcorder and voice recorder[David Garibaldi] “variable control voice actuator of my Olympus voice recorder was on off.”
That may not be the only circuit in play.
As the unit compresses the files for storage, it may not
follow the internal “clock” perfectly but, instead, MIGHT favor a “less-space-used-the-better” recording method. No way for me to know… EXCEPT that SOMETHING is changing the sync.
You might want to experiment… using a stopwatch (or clock) and a very quiet room.
Count aloud the first 10 seconds as you watch the clock.
Then, remain absolutely silent for 30 seconds, then start counting aloud again for 10 more seconds.Play that back and watch your stopwatch as the unit plays.
See if the silence “truncates” (shortens) on playback.Regardless, you might want to try another BRAND of voice recorder.
(Use my above method to see how it responds to silences.) -
An appreciative apology…
Apropos for any occasion!

November 1, 2008 at 10:16 pm in reply to: audio sync issues with camcorder and voice recorderEach device records at the same speed… that speed being in minutes and seconds.
BUT, what might be happening is that the voice recorder “truncates” (pauses recording during) any PAUSES in audio, and therefore won’t stay in sync with a unit that records continuously.
Many voice recorders do that automatically to save recording space.And/Or if you are capturing the audio files directly from the voice recorder connected via USB to your computer, the SAMPLE RATE might be wrong to sync with the video.
You can convert it to the same rate as your video camera (likely 48 kHz – or even 32 kHz) using an audio application. -

October 31, 2008 at 10:17 am in reply to: Problems intercutting location dialogue with location ambient trackThis is why many producers use ADR to re-record location dialogue.
If careful use of digital noise reduction won’t solve your BG noise issues, re-recording the dialogue
and syncing it to the image can improve the scene. If the voices match the BG noise frequencies and there is not much difference in levels between them, you won’t be able to “pull” the voice tracks cleanly away from the noise.

October 31, 2008 at 4:09 am in reply to: EditToTape-MBP to DVCAM (Sony DS-45)A Sony DSR-45 doesn’t “edit” does it?
It can only “crash record” (which with DV usually looks petty clean, however.)
To control a record deck to match-up to a Timecode pre-roll you must use the RS422 for deck control and not FireWire.
