December 7, 2007 at 2:19 pm in reply to: hardwiring a lav mic?Do you mean:
A) Connnecting the wireless receiver unit to the camera.
B) Connecting just the Lav Mic, itself (no transmitter) into the camera.
If it’s B-
If the mic is an electret condenser type, the mic needs “battery power” (1 volt or so) to power its internal amplifier.
That requries more knowledge of the mic itself and some basic electonics parts and experience in wiring.Just go on eBay and buy an inexpensive wired Lav mic.
Just about any basic mic will be as good as (or better than) the ones suppled with inexpensive wireless units. -
For highest quality, you should render ALL transitions before you output.
Generally speaking, the render files are relatively small.

December 6, 2007 at 8:20 am in reply to: capture duration inaccurateThe “duration” tells you the time in-between your marked IN and OUT points on the clip.
If there are no marks, then the duration will be the total length of the clip.
If you dropped any IN and OUT marks on the clip, the duration number will reflect that. -

December 6, 2007 at 8:18 am in reply to: capturing from VHS problemTry actually RECORDING the VHS to a DV tape first, then capture the DV tape.
Do a short experiment on a problem area before you do a whole tape this way.

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”Click the following link for instructions.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express) and a new one for FCP 5.Download these free Apple Scripts at

December 5, 2007 at 3:18 pm in reply to: Exporting Subtitles with Transparent BG from FCP into PSD SequenceHere is a post I saved about exporting with an Alpha Channel (transparent BG) from FCP.
Name: JeremyG
Date: Nov 16, 2007 at 9:19:06 pm
Subject: Re: Chroma Key without replacing backgroundAfter you pull the key, leave the sequence UNRENDERED on track 2 with nothing on track 1 (empty) and then Export > Quicktime Conversion. Change the format to ‘Quicktime Movie’ then hit the options button.
CLick the ‘Settings’ button in the video portion and keep the frame rate @ current change the compression type to Animation and be sure the depth says ‘MIllions of Colors+”. The plus (+) is an alpha channel. Click OK.
Change the audio settings to whatever is best for you (linear PCM, 48k, 24 bit). Click OK.
name the file, set a destination, then click save.

There might be a problem playing the footage from that disk in real-time.
