Continuous hum is one of the kinds of noise that can be addressed.
This is the kind of “continuous” noise that a program like Bias “SoundSoap” can help remove.

Bias has recently released “SoundSoap 2”

SoundSoap was retailing for about $50 (up to $80 just before the new “2” release).
SoundSoap 2 is priced at about $100.You export the audio, process it through SoundSoap 2 and re-import it to FCP.
OTOH, If you have FCP 5 Studio, Soundtrack Pro has “sampling” noise-reducer that does the same operation as SoundSoap.
Lastly, if you don’t have either program, you can try using the standard FCP “Hum Remover” filter, but it usually ends up eliminating most of the WANTED audio as well.

What kind of camcorder or deck are you using?
The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

This is one FCP tip that has helped in hundreds of “odd” problems.

That’s correct, the FW output does not overlay the info-graphics.

That’s the kind of thing found only in much higher-priced gear.
Some decks have a separate output jack marked “character” (or similar) that offers the ability to see the graphics. The other output never overlays the graphics.
In most camcorders, you have a choice as to whether the overlay is seen only on the viewfinder/LCD screen or to have it appear over ALL of the analog outputs at once.[John the Video Man] “I am not using the “Canon” brand connection cord like the XL-1 manual instructs me to use, but I can’t imagine that brand really matters.”
Right again. Canon does not make a “magical” Canon-only FW cable.

If you just want a “bright round circle of light” to move around the screen (causing what’s within its area to be bright and what’s around it to be dim:
Just duplicate the SAME video on two tracks (in sync) and add an “Iris” (circle, add feather edge) video filter(s) to the UPPER track.
Move it around in the Motion tabs (Key-framed) and that will be the “spot” area.
On the LOWER track, use then 3-Way Color Corrector Filter (or similar) to lower the White and Mid levels on the clip (that will be the “DARK around the Spot” area.)There are lots of subtile ways to improve this effect, but this will get you started.
(I’d create the “Green-screen over Black” effect FIRST and output that by itself as a Self-contained Quicktime Movie.
Then bring that movie back into FCP and use it as the “Base” video to the 2-layers of effects.) -
If you see the problems playing off the tape directly to a video monitor,
it MIGHT be a head-clog (although PINK BARS don’t sound too familiar).If you know how to “wet clean” the heads, carefully do so.
If not, you can try a DV head-cleaning tape (they can be found most anywhere DV tapes are sold.)Load up the DV head-cleaner and play it for ONLY about 5-7 SECONDS.
Then, eject the cleaner and try to play a known-good tape in the deck and see if the problem is gone.If not, repeat the head-cleaner tape for 5-7 seconds again.
Check the good tape for playback.Hope this clears the problem.
Otherwise, an authorized service tech is the next step.FWIW, you can choose to Capture using ANY DV camcorder (even home-video, if its a miniDV tape). The quality will be identical to using any DV deck.

Pay attention to the sections about how to recapture only the clips used on the timeline, not the WHOLE tape.

After you trashed the preferences, you’d likely have to go directly to the Mac file to tell FCP which project to open.
