Are you an experienced editor already?
If so, FCP is a fantastic creative tool, as complex or as simple as you want.
If you’re not an editor yet, there is a whole lot you should get to know about the basic “craft” of editing… whether its FCP or just a razor blade and an old 8mm film home movie.

As part of the HDV protocol, every time there is a stop in the shooting (camcorder pause) there will be a new “clip” created and there’s no way to defeat this “feature”.
Is this what’s happening?

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

This is one FCP tip that has helped in hundreds of “odd” problems.

Try selecting all of the captured files right in the Capture Scratch and “drag and drop” them physically into the open FCP Browser window.
As far as Auto Save goes, I am forever now in the habit of hitting “Command (apple)-S” very frequently (VERY FREQUENTLY) so regardless of the Auto Save, MY (regular) saving will be even more current.

Well Kevin, I’ve never heard that this list is to be taken as a deal-breaker or an end-all.
There are many DV products that may not appear on the approved list that will work perfectly with FCP. (I’m thinking of the countless home video camcorders that connect and operate just fine.)
Also, Apple is not making a judgment on any machines QUALITY, per se, just that it has been tested and can be operated within the FCP DV protocol.But a poorly-designed “piece of junk” will not work well with or WITHOUT FCP.
The point I got from Sara H’s. post was that this JVC model (her’s anyway) simply doesn’t WORK with ANYTHING.

One of my Macs is a G4 733 (512 MB).
It operates beautifully on OS X 10.2.8 with FCP 4.1.
I have virtually NO problems with daily use of FCP (that’s why I haven’t upgraded it past this point.)
I use iDVD4 and its not speedy with that (but I don’t think iDVD is ever very speedy).
It can take a couple of hours to compress and burn about an hour of DVD content. -
Is the Canvas Window set to view “Image+Wireframe”?
Its the little icon above the video image that looks like a square with broken sides. -
Continuous hum is one of the kinds of noise that can be addressed.
This is the kind of “continuous” noise that a program like Bias “SoundSoap” can help remove.

Bias has recently released “SoundSoap 2”

SoundSoap was retailing for about $50 (up to $80 just before the new “2” release).
SoundSoap 2 is priced at about $100.You export the audio, process it through SoundSoap 2 and re-import it to FCP.
OTOH, If you have FCP 5 Studio, Soundtrack Pro has “sampling” noise-reducer that does the same operation as SoundSoap.
Lastly, if you don’t have either program, you can try using the standard FCP “Hum Remover” filter, but it usually ends up eliminating most of the WANTED audio as well.
