Near the end of a timeline I slid the last video and audio event 15 frames for a smoother fade in & out of a title card. This of course leaves a 15fr gap. Is it really necessary for me to fill the gap with a slug, since I just want black there anyway?

    Thanks,
    -Les

    No.

Not really, but I always do. In the early days of FCP, I would sometimes get dropped frames when editing to tape if there were gaps in the timeline, even very small ones. If you’re using a mouse, it’s a simple right click “Fill with Slug” command.

I’ve noticed occaisions where a gap has caused a compression, based upon a QT reference of that timeline, to lose audio/video sync. After finding the matchframe where sync was lost, it turned out to be at a gap in the TL. So now I fill all gaps.
