Help FCP5 crashed during my batch capture
Posted by Mark Gringo on October 12, 2005 at 12:27 amFCP5 crashed during my batch capture and now when i open the project it is saying that the 4 tapes i captured before the crash are offline. I did the reconnect media thing and they are not coming back online, yet all the media file are there on my LaCie external HD.
Also… does FCP not auto save when the log and capture window is open? this is the second time i’ve lost data from a crash… and i was working over the 30 min default automatic save time.

Try selecting all of the captured files right in the Capture Scratch and “drag and drop” them physically into the open FCP Browser window.
As far as Auto Save goes, I am forever now in the habit of hitting “Command (apple)-S” very frequently (VERY FREQUENTLY) so regardless of the Auto Save, MY (regular) saving will be even more current.

October 12, 2005 at 12:45 amThanks for the quick response Matte.
Well I tried that but didn’t work.
Now I am getting the following message when I try to “Reconnect Media” from the bin:
___________
Some attribute of on or more of the files you have chosen do not match the atrributes of the original.
This may cause problems within the sequences that are dependent on them. The attributes that
differed are as follows:-Media Start and End
-RateWould you like to connect them again?
_________The acutal QT files are all broken into short peices (10 to 20 seconds). Not the whole clips i logged them as (4 to 5 min in length)
help! something screwing is going on in my capture.

October 12, 2005 at 12:55 amThe first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.
Next:
THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”Click the following link for instructions.
https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html
A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCPro & FCExpress.Download these free Apple Scripts at
https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
This is one FCP tip that has helped in hundreds of “odd” problems.

October 12, 2005 at 1:14 amso, i started my capture over… and this is what is happening:
when FCP goes to capture “Clip John Doe_27” it starts breaking it into:
Clip John Doe_27-1
Clip John Doe_27-2
Clip John Doe_27-3and so on and so forth. anyone know what is going on here?
Also, I am capturing HDV under the Easy Set up setting

October 12, 2005 at 1:29 am[MataAtlantica] “I am capturing HDV”
As part of the HDV protocol, every time there is a stop in the shooting (camcorder pause) there will be a new “clip” created and there’s no way to defeat this “feature”.
Is this what’s happening?

October 12, 2005 at 1:35 amThose, my friend, are timecode breaks. Go into your preferences and tell Final Cut to warn you after the capture instead of make new clip on timecode breaks. That should get you through.
Also, take off that blasted auto save and start working apple-s into your workflow frequently. Auto save has hurt me in the past (final cut 4.1) and I’ve never used it since. Save early, save often.

October 12, 2005 at 1:44 amthanks guys… but i don’t think they are time code breaks. this is happening with out any pause or stop in the camera and i have been monitoring the image with timecode on my sony HDV deck HVR-M10 and it looks seamless.
could it be that the firewire drive isn’t keeping up with the capture?
I am really stumped… I’ve never had this problem with SD.

October 12, 2005 at 1:50 amThere might not be any visible breaks in the footage. This used to happen to me with DVCPRO HD footage all the time, even though it was the same continuos shot. Please change the preferences and tell me how that works out for you.
If the drive wasn’t fast enough you would get a dropped frames error and capture would abort. It would not break up your clip into sequential clips. This is the behavior of capturing timecode breaks, or what FCP THINKS are timecode breaks. You have to trick it and tell it to keep capturing and you will be good. It’s mind of over matter.

October 12, 2005 at 2:09 amYou have to change your user preferences. I don’t have FCP5 in front of me right now, but it’s under the file menu and it’s called user preferences. In there find the where it mentions timecode breaks and change the drop down menu to warn after capture. Sorry I can’t be more specific, but I don’t remember exactly where they are. You can disable the autosave right there as well.
