  • What problems will I be facing in operating a G4 733 with OS X?

Posted by Howie Young on October 11, 2005 at 10:46 pm

    Hi Group

In my research to find out the best external firewire drive for my current G4 733 processor I have discovered that if upgrade from OS 9.2.2 to OS X Tiger my computer won’t operate efficently. I have learned that OS X is intended to operate at its peek with a dual processor and that my G4 tends to operate very slowly hindering work performance.

Can anyone share their input in operating a G4 733 with OS X? What problems will I be facing in trying to complete a DVD using iDVD 5, and operating FCP 4 or 5? How slow does the machine run?

    Thanks

    Howie

One of my Macs is a G4 733 (512 MB).

It operates beautifully on OS X 10.2.8 with FCP 4.1.

I have virtually NO problems with daily use of FCP (that’s why I haven’t upgraded it past this point.)

I use iDVD4 and its not speedy with that (but I don’t think iDVD is ever very speedy).
It can take a couple of hours to compress and burn about an hour of DVD content.

Do you know where I can get copies of FCP version 4 and iDVD 4?

    Thanks for the feedback.

    Ebay.

iDVD4 is in the suite of bundled software called “iLife 04”
    FCP 4x has multiple listings.

As always on ebay, use caution and good judgement before you buy.

My G4 733 1Gb RAM with OS 10.3.9 ran FCP 4.5 and DVD Studio Pro 3 without a hitch (DV video). You may find it will only support a 120Gb external firewire hard drive though (or only see 120Gb on a larger drive).
Now running FCP 5 on G5 2.7 I don’t see any of the frequent 10 minute render times that allowed me a coffee break on the G4 733.

Well, then you’re clearly not using enough filters and layers.

Set up a 27 track timeline, about 4 minutes long, add a bunch of Alpha & Luma Mattes, add a bunch of overlay and multiply composited elements, add the Boris Glow Filter to multiple layers and hit Render. Plenty of time for a four course meal, even with a dual proc G5. 🙂

    Hi,

Buy a new legal copy of a previous version of FCP for about $150 like this (I have not used this vendor myself – this is an example):
    https://www.shop.com/op/aprod-p18337079?sourceid=3

Then get an upgrade copy of the current version of FCP for about $400. For example:

    Best Wishes,

    Mitch

Why might a G4 733 with OS 10 only support a 120Gb external firewire hard drive though (or only see 120Gb on a larger drive)?

    Hi Group

I was wondering if anyone is running a similar system to what Phil Balsdon posted, Mac G4 733, as well as these programs – Panther (OSX 10.3), iLife (with iDVD5), DVD Studio Pro and FCP version 4.5 (HD)?

Have you encountered any problems with this type of set-up?

    Thanks
    Howie
