Before you go away thinking that you’ve just had a “special” experience… 😉
What you describe is VERY common. (In the “FAQ” league of problems.)
If FCP “locks up” during Capture Now (as it so often does), you should be able to use the Mac command called “Force Quit” to stop the “beach-ball”.
Hold down all three of these keys:
Option, Command (apple key), esc (escape).When a window pops up, make sure “Final Cut Pro” is highlighted and click on the “Force Quit” button.
If you can’t get the Force Quit to work, HOLDING in the power button on the front of the Mac (5-10 sec.) should cause a Mac Restart.
If not, unplugging for a few minutes (as you discovered) will do the trick.
NOTE:
All of these “last-resort” measures will cause you to lose anything that was not “saved” prior to implementing them.
Its a GOOD HABIT to manually hit “Command-S” (SAVE) VERY frequently during any kind of computer activity (especially FCP).Back to FCP.
Its a good idea just to NOT USE “Capture Now”.
It has always been problematic.Just VIEW your tape(s) in the “Log and Capture” mode and MARK in-points and out-points for each wanted clip.
Then you can Batch Capture only the “good” clips and save edit time and disk space. -

It COULD help, but only in regard to adding somewhat complex graphics.
DV/DVCPro can look SPECTACULAR if its a clean image from the camera.But dubbing DV into an 8-bit timeline and editing will NOT IMPROVE its original image or cause it to look cleaner on output from the edit system.
Again, Uncompressed editing does help you only IF you are adding lots of titles and graphics.
But, in any shots free of graphics, the edit image will still be the same quality
as the camera-original.
And, except for the areas rich in graphics, if you edit on a DV timeline, the image quality should be very high (identical to the camera original).You should ALWAYS monitor your edit on an external broadcast monitor during the edit.
That way, you will immediately see what your output quality will look like in the “real world”.If your edit looked good on the monitor when you finished…
AND you are seeing the overall image looking noisy on-air,
I, like others, would look at the Betacam dub and the Sat.-Uplink as the real culprit(s). -

Under these kind of uncontrolled location conditions, your audio can make or break the show.
If the camera-work is a bit frenetic, fine. That’s STYLE.
If the audio is unintelligible, CLICK, the show is un-watchable.
You’re going to need one (if not THREE) GREAT, experienced audio people.
The band-members will shout, mumble, talk-over each other, and say at least a few things that should NOT go on the air (for whatever reason).If you have adequate set-up time for each interview segment, a LAV mic on each person who speaks in that scene would work pretty well (you would not need a boom-operator (or two).
If you need to use booms, the operator(s) would need to be fast, accurate, and keep the mics out of the shot… not exactly easy if you’ve not had the proper experience.
But hand-held boom-mics can get you tracks that otherwise would go missing.You asked what mixer?
Buy any brand-name mixer with enough mic inputs.

Is there audio on all of the extra tracks?
Sometimes there are voices in my head. What are the extra tracks saying to you?
Did you change a set-up to capture 12 tracks of audio?
Oh wait, one of my head-voices just told me to tell you to try “Trashing” the FCP preferences. (And we can’t ignore head-voices!)
A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
