The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

This is one FCP tip that has helped in hundreds of “odd” problems.

Capturing DV files is NOT adjustable.
If you buy an analog capture card, some come with software that allows adjustment.
With digital, its generally better to not adjust during capture and make corrections during the edit.

Put down the DVD camcorder and step back. Walk slowly away. Don’t make any sudden moves and maybe nobody will notice that you started in this direction. 😉
These little toys are a step in the wrong direction for video acquisition.
DVD compression is much lower quality than DV.
DVD a/v can’t be used on a DV timeline without conversion (a DVD “ripper” program of some sort).
You’d be able to “eventually” edit the footage, but it would be a hassle, and the quality and reliability (how many times has a DVD-burn failed?) would be much less than DV.

1. You must only judge image quality on an external video monitor, not on the computer monitor.
2. If a reduced-size image has poor-quality, it many times can be improved by adding the “Gaussian Blur” filter adjusted to a setting of between .25 to 1.5 percent. If the image is “zoomed” visually, you can ramp in or out the amount of blur (using key-frames) during the effect.

Doesn’t matter anyway.
Adjust it during the edit with a few keystrokes.

What are your capture settings?
Easy Set-up: DV NTSC (or DV PAL, if that’s where you are)?
Are you in “Off-line JPEG” mode?

First thing to try:
Do not use “Capture Now”.
Mark In-points and Out-points from viewing the tape and then use Batch Capture.
