Compatibile with DVD camcorders?
Posted by Skychase on October 21, 2005 at 12:34 pmConsidering purchase of a camcorder that records to DVD, like the Sony DVD301. Is their native support, without rendering in FCP HD or iMovie HD ?

October 21, 2005 at 1:00 pmPut down the DVD camcorder and step back. Walk slowly away. Don’t make any sudden moves and maybe nobody will notice that you started in this direction. 😉
These little toys are a step in the wrong direction for video acquisition.
DVD compression is much lower quality than DV.
DVD a/v can’t be used on a DV timeline without conversion (a DVD “ripper” program of some sort).
You’d be able to “eventually” edit the footage, but it would be a hassle, and the quality and reliability (how many times has a DVD-burn failed?) would be much less than DV.

October 21, 2005 at 1:05 pmNope. No native support.
That camera is designed to make a DVD that you just plop into your player and press play. It records directly to mpeg-2 compression, which is worse compression than DV. To work with this, you will have to convert the VOB file to DV using DVDxDV or Mpeg Streamclip. Then you will be able to edit it with FCP.
But if you then take that footage that you editing, and compress it again for DVD…it will look horrible. Compressed 3 times…MPEG-2 to DV to MPEG-2.
You are better served getting a camera that records to DV tape.

Or better yet, wait for the Panasonic DVCPro HD camera due out shortly for under $10k. Record DVCPro to tape or HD to hard drive.

And when the smoke clears the ring, there will be no DVD camcorder left standing to tell the tale!

=======If you mean the HVX200 then it’s DVCPRO or DVCPROHD to memory cards and only DV to tape. So if one is not willing to invest in memory chips yet they’d be better off with a cheaper DV camera for now. I don’t know what skychase wants to do, but if they are looking at DVD cameras I’m guessing that HD isn’t a priority for them and they should instead look at things like the DVX-100A.
