It is simply an automatic function of VHS (and most other video) recordings.Just start recording at the beginning of your new tape, and don’t stop EITHER deck (the player or the recorder) until well-past the end of your program.

There ARE some “pro” VHS decks that have all these options.
(I just THREW AWAY 3 of them last month… of no use to anyone these days).
But, I’ve never heard of these “requirements” for a VHS tape’s audio.
This would be a much more common specification for 3/4″ U-Matic and/or BetaCam tapes.
Most places don’t have the capability to record on each audio track separately on VHS (as you don’t) and the LINEAR (non-Hi-Fi) tracks on VHS are AWFUL.
I’m still betting this audio spec is not for VHS.

No, but just click on the timeline and hit “Shift-Z” and all will be revealed.
This works with all the windows and “timelines” (like in the Motion Tab) in FCP.

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

And the image and audio quality is superb.
(Even the SLP recordings are very “watchable” unlike other DVD burners I’ve used.)No component inputs, but it has S-Video (almost as good as Component. looks great) and FireWire for direct input from a DV source.
I used mine constantly for months… no problems.

Capture it to WHAT?
An NLE edit system?I recommend capture to a TimeCode tape first.
A DV camcorder that has the feature of analog inputs will do this.
Also, most DV camcorders that DO have the analog input feature will allow you to “transcode” analog-to-digital in real-time and capture directly via FireWire into a computer.But I still recommend the “copy to TC tape” step.
It gives you the ability to recapture in the future and allows a “digital master” to be stored.
It can also make the VHS signal (which is usually pretty ugly and unstable) a bit more solid and easier to capture. -

For DV SP the fast easy way is:Final Cut Pro (pull-down menu) > Easy Setup… > DV-NTSC > Setup

If you stay in SD:
Sony PD170 or VX2100.
Superb in low light.
Excellent low-noise images.The PD has XLR pro audio inputs with Phantom power for mics.
The VX has a stereo mini-jack for an audio input like your GL.That’s the major difference, although the PD has more “click-stops” (finer adjustment) on the manual iris control.
