Best bet for entry level pro-sumer cam
Posted by Nicholas Johnson on March 21, 2006 at 9:02 pmHi all,
I’m frustrated with the fact my GL1 has a 13pixel overscan area (which is fine for TV display…but otherwise sucks) and was wondering what would be best for me to look at for an entry level pro-sumer cameraNicholas Johnson replied 20 years, 1 month ago 5 Members · 5 Replies -

March 21, 2006 at 9:19 pmIf you stay in SD:
Sony PD170 or VX2100.
Superb in low light.
Excellent low-noise images. The PD has XLR pro audio inputs with Phantom power for mics.
The VX has a stereo mini-jack for an audio input like your GL.That’s the major difference, although the PD has more “click-stops” (finer adjustment) on the manual iris control.

March 21, 2006 at 9:27 pmIf you’re otherwise happy with your GL1 then a PD-170 should thrill you.
(And they’re still doing a $300 rebate on them through March 31st. Look up the camera on B&H online for info on that.)

March 21, 2006 at 9:29 pmIf you wish to go ahead and jump into the HDV spectrum of the market, which is not a bad idea considering the fact that HD is just around the corner. Check out the HDV series of cameras from Sony – the FX1 and the Z1. The Z1 is the brodcast version, so the speak. It has XLR inputs, can record HDV, DV, or DVCAM for whatever project that you have. I will say this, the downconverted HDV to DV from the camera is tons better than that of the Canon GL1 or XL1 (XL2) cameras.

March 21, 2006 at 10:09 pmHave you looked at the DVX100? If you don’t need the progressive scan mode, Panasonic put out the DVC80 which is the identical camera without the progressive scan mode. Same controls, same body, same everything. They discontinued it because it was competing with the DVX100, but you can still find them on ebay or from some camera stores. It is the camera I have and I absolutely love it. It tears the GL1 apart in just about every area.
…just a thought
and how convenient…I am planning on selling mine shortly 🙂
