No, you got it all wrong…
I have software that can convert LTC on a QT audio channel to QT TC.
But you don’t need it!
Avid can decode it ass well.
If you don’t know this stuff:
Either dive into the manual, or hire me as a consultant.

Ron,
For testing, you could use disk images, or CD’s / DVD’s
They are seen by the OS as removable drives.

Creating a disk image is very easy on Mac, use the disk util.

No idea about the cams options, but if they have any half decent audio in, just broadcast an LTC signal and have them record it.
Should work swell.
If you don’t have a master TC generator, you can get one from me for 24 euros.

Now if the cams are so far away that you cannot wire / broadcast, only option is to use their internal clock.
Try to set the cam’s clock the same as good as possible.
Then you can use this to generate QT TC on the clips based on shooting start. (you have to wrap or transcode the Mpeg to QT first)

(From version 4 Avid can import QT and keep the QT timecode)
Of course this will get you not frame accurate TC, but at least within a second or so.)

I’m currently making an app. that does just that.

and more…

It works either manual or auto
(meaning, every new inserted card gets copied to one or two different locations without user interaction)
It then will do a thorough check if every bit has arrived.
It is smart enough to remember what cards are already offloaded.
If you like, It will make a new directory per day, and per card.
And if you like, it will erase the card when it is done.

I’ll make it available for both mac and windows.

I’m hoping to have a first version done by tomorrow. I’ll post here if there is something to toy with.

Well, almost all drama is shot with just one camera…
It can be done, just don’t think a multicam project will get you there, you have to edit normally…
(meaning, select all best takes / best angle, line everything up, trim to the correct pace & cut points, depending on taste…)

Ty is very understanding and easy going.
I’m not.

You have to MIX until YOU think it sounds good overall.
No matter the tools, just do what you think needs to be done.

Normalizing is (open for discussion) setting the max peak of a piece of audio to a certain level, and adjust all other levels accordingly.
This is not what you are after.

Mix, then export to 16 bit @ 48K, set peak level to about -6.

Then, if you go to AC-3, make sure you know what you are doing there.
If in doubt, go to one of the DVD fora and ask for settings to create good AC3

Some more info for the XML EXPERTS (stupid spambot does not allow me to say spec*alists )
I have received two clips from the offending project and toyed around with them.

the project was shot @ 60, but the clips are now 23.976 (aka FCP 23.98)
However, they still contain the 60 fps TC.
Should not be a problem since FCP relinks on file and relative frame number in this case, but for the softness i suspect something like time base problems.
But maybe FCP does not like it this way?

Next problem that i find hard to tackle:
The sound in the footage is a mix of mono and stereo channels, where clips that have both mono and stereo files in them are causing trouble.
No idea why this is causing trouble with media management though…
A roundtrip trough XML makes that the sequence actually does allow to media manage.
Another option is to paste dual mono for the stereo files into the QT.
But i have no idea how the mapping of QT sound channels to FCP sound channels is done, and i suspect that it won’t be painless if the audio isn’t finished / exported yet.

So if anyone knows how the mapping is done, i would love to learn.
