Why do you have to normalize anything?

Because my DVDs have always low volume so I want to normalize the audio.

But I don’t if I have to normalize every track separately or all the video (between a trak and the next there is some spoken).

Normalizing is too general a procedure. How come you’re not mixing your audio to the proper level during post production?

I’m mixing the audio of two sources: the mixer output and the panoramic microphone of one camera.

The problem is that some songs has lower volumes than others (some songs are instrumental only). So I want to normalize all to 0 db, for the DVD.

I use Final Cut for the video and Logic for the audio on MacOs X.

Without knowing anything about your recording or the style of music, etc., it seems very unlikely that simply normalizing the entire concert recording will yield good results. It is typical to apply level adjustments (at minimum normalizing each segment) separately to each song and each speech segment.

It may be that normalizing the loudest songs and maybe the speech to 0dB Full Scale may be appropriate, but only you can make that decision because you have the video and audio to work with and know what the music should sound like. You probably wouldn’t want to normalize ALL the songs to the same level. Unless they are all max-volume head-banging heavy metal or something. 🙂

Ty is very understanding and easy going.
I’m not.

You have to MIX until YOU think it sounds good overall.
No matter the tools, just do what you think needs to be done.

Normalizing is (open for discussion) setting the max peak of a piece of audio to a certain level, and adjust all other levels accordingly.
This is not what you are after.

Mix, then export to 16 bit @ 48K, set peak level to about -6.

Then, if you go to AC-3, make sure you know what you are doing there.
If in doubt, go to one of the DVD fora and ask for settings to create good AC3

FCP has simple but effective mixing tools. Use them to get peaks about -3dB at the higherst.
