I don’t really get it.
If you have ingested the second cam already, you can reconnect by exporting a list, alter it and import it.

If you have not ingested yet, and don’t want to ingest everything,
FCP cannot do that by itself. (Unlike Avid that does partial import)

It will be cheaper in the near future.
I’m now building a software based BWF recorder.
Add a piece of hardware of your choice to a small laptop, and you’re done.
A decent IO box (usb, 4 channels) is about 150 – 200 USD.
I’m assuming you bring a laptop in all cases to offload the stuff you shoot, and my software will be less than 50 bucks.

So you’re done quite cheap, but of course a laptop and external box ain’t the most practical for run and gun shooting, but that’s not what these cameras are for anyways.

Let me introduce myself. I run a high-end video post production facility, and i write (custom) software for the audio/visual/film industry.

It’s not that i don’t know what could happen, its just that i cannot understand that anyone is putting out a piece of crap this unit is.
M-audio is Avid. I have used Avid products over more than a decade, and i’ve never seen something as bad as this.

My guess was that i’ve overlooked something, but the more i dive into it, the more i’m convinced that this is either bad desing or bad manufacturing.

Going to a VAR wednesday to get a decent piece of gear.

(what i’m doing is making a software based BWF recorder with LTC out, and i liked the front knobs of the Fasttrack, so i bought one.)

You can keep original timecode, using QTchange:

First set the TC on the original clips, then transcode.
Compressor should keep the TC.

If you have kept the original THM files, QTchange can take the TC info from there. It’s way more accurate than the Log and Transfer does.
(That rounds to whole seconds, while QTchange uses the fractional seconds in the THM.)

If you have not kept the THM, you can use the file creation date.
Should give you the same values as Log and Transfer.

Silent in this case means silent. No sound, nothing, nada.
– infiniti DB, or digital sample values of 0.
IOW, as loud as no mic attached…

As for your statements that trim controls are not always ment to be lineair, that’s indeed new to me. I haen’t seen it on any mixer i’ve used, and i can’t understand in what situation it could be handy.
Humans think/move close to linear, not to log.

Besides, i can’t believe it was intentionally on this thing, sicne it’s being sold as a mic pre-amp. And having just a few degrees making the difference between overmodulating and no recording at all ain’t the way i can work…

So i was hoping for something else i’ve missed.

Two things you have missed:

BWF does not work properly with FCP.
In NTSC, BWF is intepreted always as NDF, even if you’re in a DF project.

Next, to get LTC into FCP, you need this:

It also has a helper application to merge BWF to QT, so you don’t have to select both video / audio and press ‘ merge ‘

If you work like this, the smart slate is just a backup.

You do whatever is needed to bring the message across, in a areadable form.
Most of the time, you need to shorten the text.
This always means consessions. You cannot have things like double negatives, as it takes too much screensize / words and is way too confusing.

But this also means you include any profanity, translated to your language. (That’s a form of art by itself).
Also, local differences have to be translated. (Some cultures never use the word ‘no’, but intend it as much as we do. Up to you to decide…)

Keep in mind that people watch the image, and just glance at the subs.
Rule of thumb, if you can read a title out loud in the time it’s on screen, you’re save.
(If it is easy to understand text.)

As stated already, if you slave the cam’s TC, the framerate has to match.
But if you put your LTC output on one of the cams sound channels, it does not matter, IF:
the decoding device is smart enough to know that the LTC framerate on the soundchannel differs from the clips TC framerate.

In all dual system sound setups, test with the post guys!
(Not all understand the workflow)
