I have footage from a two camera interview shot on EX3 at 1080p25 with sync’d timecode. One camera is CU and one is Wide.

The footage was ingested via log and transfer.

I made multiclips from each pair of CU and Wide clips but then realized that I couldn’t make subclips from the multiclips so I used the wide clips to make selects as subclips.

Now I want to make multiclips from each of these subclips.

Here’s my problem: In the old tape days I could select all my subclips, export a batch list, change the reel name from A to B, re-import the batch list and batch dig the exact same clips from the other camera.

Is there anyway to do this with the XDCAM HD files. Both cams have the same timecode so theoretically I’m looking for some way/software/etc to break the CU clips up into the same subclips as the wide ones that I did manually.

    Thanks!

    I don’t really get it.
If you have ingested the second cam already, you can reconnect by exporting a list, alter it and import it.

If you have not ingested yet, and don’t want to ingest everything,
FCP cannot do that by itself. (Unlike Avid that does partial import)

The only solution is to use this:

I might be getting the terms wrong – but its EX3 footage so it may be XDCAM EX not HD but either way..

I tried the export a list, alter it and import route but the subclips, even though they have the same timecode and reel names, will not reconnect to the cu masters – I renamed all subclips with a description but in their logging info they refer to the original ingested master clip as the file on the drive.

I don’t really think they should reconnect as each subclip is about 30s – 1m and each master is about 30 mins long.

Does XDCAM extract work with the SXS cards (or their copied folders) as well or just the XDCAM Disks?

Oops, my bad (It’s terribly early here and i did not have had coffee)

No idea if it could work with EX. I don’t know the file structure, nor the XML / directory structure.

I can test if you like, but i don’t think there is a need.

FCP’s relinking works on Clip Name. That HAS to match.
If so, FCP starts looking if there is TC it can work with.
If so, it uses the TC for correct in / out.
If not, it uses the relative offset (in frames) based on the original.
(Most of the cases this will not work with video, but it is a nice feature if you want to relink to a fresh altered AE render or something.)

So in your case it’s the naming. Now renaming is dangerous, as you end up with double filenames, and you might end up with wrong relinks.
So if you can alter the names in the export list, and alter the filenames to match, you should be good.
You could use my FCP relink app, but if it’s multicam, it’s probably a few long takes so doing it manually will not take too much time.

    Thanks!

The FCPReconnect app is exactly what I was looking for!

I exported a batch list of all my subclips, altered the reel name, brought the altered batch list into FCPReconnect, it found the other cam as the right clip to reconnect, I chose to copy by ref and keep relative path then made the ref files.

I imported the batch list back into FCP and reconnected!

    A few little issues:

some of the files were created with the .MOV extension in the middle of the filename instead of at the end.
FCP still complains about the media start and end not matching on the clips.

    Am I doing something wrong?

No idea, the renaming FCO does is still a bit of a mystery to me.
(especially if a clip is used multiple times)
Contact me offlist, and i’ll see what i can do.
