syncing sound and video in post from a smart slate
hello everyone I’m just getting started on a new edit project and the production used a smart slate. This will be my first time using one. Before I dive in to anything I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions about how to sync video and sound using the jam sync. I know the smart slate is supports to make your life easier, so I would like to start this project out that way.

All you need to do is run the same timecode to each camera/deck you want to use and then on to the slate. They should all be set to record the same frame rates too.

Is a smart slate just one that has the time code from the audio recorder displayed on it? If so you could set the video aux time code so that it matches the visual code on the slate and then sync using that code. Or you could make a multi-clip using that code or merge clips using that code.

Yeah, if the audio and TC in it matches the slate, you’ll gain in syncing time for sure (don’t get around it however). All you need is TC out from that audio recorder.
The slate is just a TC reading device.

shouldn’t the smart slate be jamed with the camera and the audio recorder so that both times codes match? so I should be able to merge clips using the time code option right? but I’ve been reading that FCP does not see audio time codes, is this true?

FCP will read broadcast wav files and their embedded timecode metadata.
The slate should show the audio timecode. If the camera was running the same jam synced code then the video and audio files should have identical timecode.
It is critical that the timecode type is identical on picture & audio. So frame rate and DF NDF should be the same on both sources. What is the frame rate & code type on both?

In an ideal world, yes. But the OP doesn’t seem to have a camera with TC in or out…

Two things you have missed:
BWF does not work properly with FCP.
In NTSC, BWF is intepreted always as NDF, even if you’re in a DF project.Next, to get LTC into FCP, you need this:

If you work like this, the smart slate is just a backup.
