  • Trouble with frame rate on audio, I think

    FCP 6.06
I have a movie that was shot in 24PA(23.98) on a Panasonic DVX. My sequences are 23.98.

I recently received the audio stems back from the sound designer in AIFF form. He works on Protools. He said that the default export framerate that was in the software was 29.97, but that it shouldn’t matter because AIFF’s are sample-based and not frame-based.

I have tried changing my Easy Setup feature to each 23.98fps, 24fps, and 29.97 fps, each time restarting FCP and reimporting the AIFF files from him. I did this because I read on CC that FCP actually ASSIGNS a frame rate based on Final Cut’s settings on import.

Each time I check these imported files against the original audio, it is off (when I lay it down in the 23.98 sequence, with the original audio on separate tracks). It drifts progressively throughout the 33-minute piece until its late by a couple seconds at the end, losing 6-7 frames/5 minutes (which I would think would indicate that it was done at 24fps, while my sequence is 23.98).

Even without laying it down on the sequence, when I check it in the viewer it is always off by the same amount in the same places.

The other weird thing (which other’s have also complained of in CC) is that the waveform in the sequence from the imported audio actually matches the correct audio, it just plays differently. So in other words, when someone is talking, the waveform may be flat, or vice versa.

I’m stuck. Since changing the default import settings for Final Cut didn’t resolve this, is this something that’s resolvable on my machine without losing sound quality?

    Thanks for your help!

Is the audio 44K or 48K, that will make a difference if he gave it to you as 44K. If he did, open it up in QT Pro and export it as another aiff at 48K

    It’s 48 according to I-tunes and FCP.

OK. I resolved it, but the resolution does not make sense to me.

I imported the audio at 23.98, then exported it at 24 into a QT movie.

I then reimported it at 23.98, and now it is lined up perfectly.

    ARGGGG!

if you open the clip in QT pro, does it show EXACTLY 48K, or 48.048?
