    Neil,
The NTSC route is not quite as you describe.
(For the OP as well), you need to slow down to 23.976, and make an MpegII from that.
Imported assets in the authoring package (i suspect DVD SP) now will show the asset if it was 29.97
The player will add the pulldown (6 extra frames) if needed.

The 24 to 25 routine is indeed a very common way, but there is no real need to go to 25, as over here about 99% of the players will play NTSC / 23.976 discs just fine.

(I’ve did a very large project with 25 fps scanned film, intended for international sale. I worked the other way around, slowed down 25 to 23.976, scaled to 720 x 480 to avoid double authoring / mastering / warehouse costs)

  • Quicktime only displays TC if they are .mov files.
I’ve got a tool here (build for another purpose) that does this for MXF, AVI, QT, Red, THM, MpegII and DPX.

    In batch…

Contact me direct if you want more info.

March 20, 2011 at 11:10 am in reply to: 7d time and date stamp?

Latest version of QTchange can do a very fast TC/reelname insertion.
    (close to instant)
TC is the same as time, taken from the file creation time or .THM file, and if you set the Reelname to the date, you’re there.

What it does is creating a QT text track. Not all applications will display it, but Quicktime does, and so does Compressor.

So, after adding the date / time, convert the files to Prores or any other editing codec, and the date / time will be burned in forever.

Projects between Mac and windows are compatible, and so is the media.
    No problems there.
But, you might want to have the footage transferred to a Mac drive.
(You could use Paragon, but i won’t advise it.)
    Make a backup as well!

Next, it’s up to you if you want hardware. If you want cheap, get a used Adrenaline with HD option. But beware that it won’t be supported after the current version of MC.

    No, i won’t elaborate.
You got your native files as QT, from there, go where you want to go.
    It’s up to you.

  • Second vote for working in frames rather than Msecs, as you probably always need an integer.
(My software mostly works in Msecs, as for syncing sound i sometimes want subframe accuracy. And sound has not a timebase, unless you call the sample rate timebase (some do).)
Video/film of course needs frames to be identified, and often also the specific field you’re on.

Now for the math, i normally work with (1000 / 1001.)

    That means:
Pal is 1000 msecs / 25 frames = 40 Msecs duration per frame
    NTSC (both drop AND non-drop!) = 1000 / 30 * (1000 / 1001)= 33.3
This is the same as 30 / 1.001, but explains it a bit better…

the real trouble lies in reverse-creating the bugs in QT / FCP to stay compatible…
(For 59.98, display in QT player is different from FCP…)
And, in FCP there is a lot of stuff going on ‘under the hood’ that is unclear. (Hence the tremendous amount of posts here where people go out of sync on imported sound files where there seems to be no logic at all…)

    all is true, BUT:
For quality, i rather have DV pal mastered onto a BVW series betacam than uncompressed on mastered on an UVW series.
