    Hi all,

I’m curious. A friend of mine is editing a reality series for our national broadcaster (SABC here is South Africa). He gets the HD content off a harddrive and, due to the facility’s insistence (size), is transcoding the HD clips down to DVpal quicktimes for edit. Final delivery for the broadcaster is Beta SP. My question is would it make any noticeable difference, quality wise, if he transcoded to Prores 422 and laid that to Beta SP, as opposed to working in DVPal? Doesn’t it all end up basic SD in the end due to the nature of the beta sp tape?

    Thanks for any thoughts!

It will make a huge difference to his text, graphics, and color correction. DV is about as bad as he could do.

Converting HD source files to DVPAL?

    That’s a terrible choice. Just don’t.

    Go for ProRes422 PAL.
Not just quality wise. But wise in general.

There’s not really any such thing as basic SD, but a DV file would only have half the colour resolution that Beta SP has (and once it’s gone, it’s gone).

    So…. what David said.

Okay, that’s what I was curious about, the information stored between Beta SP and DV. Thanks all. You would not believe the facility demanding DVPal conversions is one of the top post facilities in the country… It explains why our TV is of such shitty quality! I’m going to pass this thread on.

    Thanks again.

    all is true, BUT:
For quality, i rather have DV pal mastered onto a BVW series betacam than uncompressed on mastered on an UVW series.

[Bouke Vahl] ” i rather have DV pal mastered onto a BVW series betacam than uncompressed on mastered on an UVW series.”

I understand your point Bouke, but it confuses the issue here. The PreRes422 advice is the way to go and as Bouke is implying, the quality of the SP beta machine also matters, so avoid the cheaper UVW series machines.
