just got back yesterday from Miami, downgrading a client’s big post facility down to a dramatically smaller facility. Things are very slow for him, and he is doing what it takes to survive.

Things are slow. Except for my clients in D.C. who are gearing up to do all the political campaigns.

  • Catalina is on every major new system. If you have a 2019 Mac Pro or a 2018 Mac Mini, or a 2019 16″ MacBook Pro, it comes with Catalina. Are you actually saying that these are unusable machines ?

Almost everyone I know has updated to macOS 10.15, and those that have not, are running 10.14.x.
Almost NO ONE is running macOS 10.13.6, and NO ONE is running 10.12.x or earlier.

Apple is not going to create support for 32 bit applications. Never going to happen. They wont’ support Thunderbolt 2 hardware, and you have to disable System Integrity Protection to get any thunderbolt 2 hardware driver to load.

Small companies are not coddled by Apple or Microsoft. Its the job of these companies (I don’t care if it’s Blackmagic, NVidia, Adobe, AJA, AVID, etc.) to keep up with what Apple and Microsoft are doing, or they will no longer be in business.

    This is the real world.

I was trying to be funny, and a smart ass. I guess you did not get the humor in my post.

    did I miss something –
did Mr. Lindqvist mention 2TB drives in his original post ?
However, YOU, Ranier, did mention 2TB drives no longer produced –
please tell me – what is this –
    https://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-DT01ACA200-7200-Internal-Drive/dp/B009CPDI62

Now, as for Mr. Lindqvist – because I would like to address the current social situation in our world.
    Who is Christopher Columbus
    Who is George Washington
    Who is Dave Bargen
    Who is Jack Calaway
    Who is Eric Peters
    Who is Bill Warner
SO – what is AVID Unity (never heard of it) – what is AVID ISIS (never heard of it) –

There is ONLY AVID Nexis – there has never been another shared storage system. What you are referring to has never even existed. You have a piece of metal that is not part of the history of the video industry.

    reality check Herb –
    1) you will get 5 years out of it – no question
    2) how much longer are both you and I going to be doing this? Think you will need a new super computer 10 years from now ? I certainly won’t. (I am amazed that people are hiring me now !).

    very nice article –

personally, if you are going to use a budget Synology, I would not recommend anything smaller than the DS1819+ with the optional dual 10GbE card. And eight matching 7200 RPM drives in a single RAID group. If you are doing 4K, this is the minimum Synology setup you should be using.

June 12, 2020 at 1:19 pm in reply to: QNAP TVS-871T Permissions and Disconnect Issues

    Hi –
you should have been using SMB and not NFS since FCP X 10.3, when Apple started to support it.

Your disconnects to the QNAP are due to the macOS. I will call you in 2 hours, and give you the
fix for your Mac’s for this. You install the fix, and reboot your Mac. End of problem.

    Call you around 11:00 EST.

    Come on Rainer –
Sebastian is in Poland. You can get your old unused DataVideo over to him somehow, right ?
It’s not like you will ever use it ever again.

June 10, 2020 at 2:18 pm in reply to: Apple WWDC 2020

for the last several years, Grant Petty has been putting on a “virtual presentation” in his lab with all the equipment. Apple could do the same – but I guess they like all the big “hoopla” associated with the big stage and big screen. And of course – “we” don’t care about the watches, phones, smart speaker, etc. “We” want to see the next gen MB Pros with WiFi6 (if that even materializes). “We want to see new iMac’s, Mac Minis, and (dare I say it) development of the Mac Pro. But I know that in the big picture of things – these are all very unimportant to the bottom line of Apple. Does the typical college student buying a MacBook Pro really care about WiFi 6 ?
