  • Can a Pre Roll Post tape archive be opened with any other software?

Posted by Nick Ralf on July 15, 2020 at 6:52 pm

Pre Roll Post has given up the ghost completely on Catalina. Imagine don’t support it and doesn’t sound like they going to based on conversations with Dan over there.

    So its redundant software.

Id like to move to another piece of LTO software that WILL be supported by the company that created it – so just wondered if anything else will open my LTO tape archives – or am I stuck with PRP?

(I sincerely hope not as it has been nothing but trouble since I got it).

    Answers hugely appreciated. 🙂

    Hi Nick,

first of all – Catalina is a pain in the ass. You are screwed when you did the upgrade.
I think within a year or two all third party developers will be able to provide support for Catalina and co. PRP is not out of businees and I think they will move on to 64 bit.
Or Apple will move on and provides support for 32bit applications.
    cheers

Catalina is on every major new system. If you have a 2019 Mac Pro or a 2018 Mac Mini, or a 2019 16″ MacBook Pro, it comes with Catalina. Are you actually saying that these are unusable machines ?

Almost everyone I know has updated to macOS 10.15, and those that have not, are running 10.14.x.
Almost NO ONE is running macOS 10.13.6, and NO ONE is running 10.12.x or earlier.

Apple is not going to create support for 32 bit applications. Never going to happen. They wont’ support Thunderbolt 2 hardware, and you have to disable System Integrity Protection to get any thunderbolt 2 hardware driver to load.

Small companies are not coddled by Apple or Microsoft. Its the job of these companies (I don’t care if it’s Blackmagic, NVidia, Adobe, AJA, AVID, etc.) to keep up with what Apple and Microsoft are doing, or they will no longer be in business.

    This is the real world.

Nick, to answer your question, PreRollPost is LTFS so other software will be able to read your tapes. One issue may arise if you have spanned tapes. YMMV

It’s unfortunate to hear about your experience with Pre Roll Post. While Pre Roll Post may not be an option for Catalina, there are other LTO software options available that can potentially open your tape archives. Some popular choices include YoYottaID, Archiware P5, and BRU Producer’s Edition. It’s worth exploring these alternatives to see if they meet your needs and are compatible with your archives. Best of luck in finding a solution that works for you!

Yes, a Pre Roll Post tape archive can frequently be opened with other software, but this is dependent on the file format and type of data stored. such as IBM Spectrum Archive and Archiware P5, may support the format if they understand the archive structure.
