well, I have been dying to discuss this, but I was nervous about saying anything too politically incorrect.
I watched in horror, the looting of Melrose Mac in Hollywood last night, in the safety of my home. It made me sick.
OK – so now, let’s talk about the REALITY of remote editing once again (a more professional discussion
for these forums). I was contacted by an editor in LA, late yesterday, about doing editing at home, or remote editing. He is doing a series for Netflix, and is going to work from home now. All Media Composer. He is getting his AVID’s from Pacific Post. So I went to Pacific Post’s website.They offer everything you need, at what appears to me to be very very very reasonable prices –

IS THIS TOO MUCH MONEY for a professional editor who is doing a series for Netflix ?I then saw on the same page – I saw that you can get an AVID Nexis with 40 TB of storage for

Netflix ?Exactly what is going on here. Are there ZERO BUDGETS and everyone is getting paid pennies ?
All of this makes me angry. When I see the kids on the editors forum on Reddit who are literally working for $50 bucks to make a complete YouTube video for someone – is this what our industry is becomming ?

You transfer to a digital format and archive on a digital format. If someone PAID ME to transfer to an outdated videotape format, I would not do it. I won’t be alive that much longer, but it doesn’t matter – its a complete waste of time. I don’t care if you transfer to SATA drives, or SSD’s or a cloud site, or if you transfer to a single 1TB drive and then take forever to find multiple cloud services to archive your data (or pay for it with a real cloud service) – doing a transfer to D-VHS in 2020 is just insane.I have no idea of exactly what DV deck you have. Nothing has Firewire 400 these days. You take the composite or component outputs and go into “something” – assorted Blackmagic converters will be cheap enough (you need to probably frame sync it with a Teranex before it will get recorded onto something, like a capture card or Hyperdeck. Once its in this format, feel free to upload it to Amazon, Google Drive, Backblaze, or buy your own LTO solution. But certainly dont’ use D-VHS. Exactly what are you going to do when that D-VHS machine dies ? How will you retrieve your media ? Rely on eBay ?
And since I am torturing you – let’s take this to the end. So you now transfer to SATA, or SSD, or whatever. 10 Years from now, this format will be obsolete, and you won’t be able to play it back (no different than DLT, AIT, DAT, iomega ZIP, Floppy Disk, etc.). So it is YOUR responsibility for the REST OF YOUR LIFE, and the rest of the next person that takes your place’s life – to migrate this data to the “next format”. OR you pay a cloud service, who will bill you on a regular basis, and do this “behind the curtain”. But yes – you will PAY AND PAY for the rest of your life. You don’t get to make your D-VHS tapes, and they will be seen 30 years from now on D-VHS. That is not going to happen. It hasn’t happened for ANY tape format, and it CERTAINLY is not going to happen for D-VHS.

wow – this is sure becoming political ! Is this allowed on Cow ?
Well, since I love to cause trouble – this is what will happen (and I could be wrong – and I am often wrong).
You see all the reports and news about people ignoring social distancing, and young people going to the beaches, and parties, and NOT social distancing – you know – all those “Covidiots”. Many people will not tolerate the lock down, and many people feel that literally going out of business (and having the majority of the country go out of business) is worse that people dying.SO – what will happen (because all those evil business people want to keep making money) – is that they will find other states to shoot, and do production in – that do NOT have lock down. Can’t shoot in LA – let’s shoot in Atlanta. “OH – they are SO Irresponsible” – well, that is what is going to happen. No matter how you feel about “we must be safe” and “we must save our grandparents” (I am of that age) – the world will go on – death be damned – and everything will continue. Can’t make Telsa cars in California – move it to Texas (which is happening). Can’t make movies in Hollywood – they will shoot in Atlanta or Austin, or another city.
That is exactly what is going to happen. It will apply to all industries. And just like Malaria, Measles, Chicken Pox, Polio, Influenza, etc. – Covid-19 is here to stay – it will ALWAYS be on our planet. And once day soon, when YOU get a bad case of Covid-19 (I hope not !) – you will take Remdesivir by Gilead Science (which will be approved by 2021), and the odds are you will get better. Covid 19 will never go away. And neither will the other diseases. And production (and every other industry) will continue.

Well – this is your interpretation, and it’s kind of silly. The business model always changes. There was a profitable printing press business at one time. There was a profitable newspaper business at one time. Those “billionaires” went away, or helped finance news via the internet, and printing via computers (those evil people at HP and Epson !).
As for cars, and fossil fuels – isn’t Elon Musk the model of someone that disrupts the technology, and becomes a new “evil billionaire” in the process. As for the poor internet services that prevent high speed communications, so we have to pay for “profitable subscription TV services” – Frontier Communications (ex Verizon FiOS) – just declared bankruptcy. It’s only a matter of time before “evil” companies like Spectrum, Comcast, COX, etc. are taken over by other “evil” companies like Google, Amazon, Apple, etc. And the game will change – and now the new set of “evil billionaires” will take over.
The comments made, make it seem like competition doesn’t exist, and that only the established rich companies can make a living. That was never the case, and it will never be the case. While there will always be the “evil” billiionaires – the players will constantly change – just like they always have. Progress moved forward, no matter how rich and powerful you are.
The demand for work at home has existed long before anyone knew the name Covid-19. Someone will eventually run these fiber lines, or there will be a new technology (super WiFi, etc.)

I completely agree with Brett. The internet infrastructure in the United States is terrible. And with the observation of Frontier Cable just recently declaring bankruptcy, I doubt that Spectrum, Comcast, RCN, COX, etc will ever do anything about it. It will take a buyout from giants like Google, Amazon, Apple, etc. to make this happen, and then all the politicians will cry “antitrust” and “monopoly”. So yea – we are at least 10 years away from this, unless a new technology (not 5G) changes all of this for us.
My great fear (and no offense Mr. Raudonis) is that what will happen now, is what happened when the writers strike happened in LA years ago, and “reality television” was created, just to get something on the air. It was “good enough”. And that “good enough” has the potential to completely ruin everything for the professional market. Shoot on an iPhone ? Good enough. Shoot the Superbowl with 10 NDI cameras instead of a fleet of NEP trucks, Sony Broadcast Cameras and GVG switchers ? Good enough. And if it’s “good enough”, the network owners will say “why are we paying all this money for all this expensive high end stuff, when we have the same viewing audience, and are charging the same advertising revenue”. And high end will fade away – just like it did in the audio world and photography world (and please don’t lecture me that there are still high end photographers, and audio mixers – of course there are – but that market is a tiny fraction of what it used to be). And WE are the high end market, and except for the lucky few (perhaps the most skilled of us, and the ones with the best connections) – the majority of us will be replaced with people shooting on their iPhones, switching with an ATEM Mini Pro, and recording audio on their iPads with Garage band. And the post here (and other forums) will turn into “hey – anyone know where I can get more cloud services offering free storage space ? I am running out of room on my Google Drive account, and they want 10 bucks a month for more space, but I am shooting this new show for Bunim Murray, and there is no budget, so anyone know where I can get more free storage space ?” (sorry Mark)

I have to assume that Bill is in San Diego. I have just read on Reddit that some guys who are editors in San Diego now have AT&T with the Qualcomm test project, and are getting 900 Mb/sec upload speeds. That is AMAZING – and that is the future of our business for remote workflow. Companies like Comcast and Spectrum will never invest in the infrastructure to do this, but AT&T apparently is – and of course Google did for a while. Once this becomes a reality for all of us – then remote editing will become more of a reality. 900 Mb/sec is not 10G speeds – but it is 10 times better than what we can get here in Florida !

what of course is amazing about this – is if you search YouTube – within THREE DAYS, there are countless remakes of this original song. I guess this defines the term “viral video”. This should be a lesson for everyone that thinks “oh – that’s just stupid” – NO – this is how you market yourself. This is how you separate yourself from the pack. There are lots of little kids playing virtuoso guitar, piano, etc. but how many are GETTING ATTENTION like this, and having other people copy this, and repost this, with their version.
This is – in fact – genius – even though she had no idea at this time. This is what companies pay big money for.

to simply answer the question “what are we missing without NAB” –
many feel “I do not need NAB – I can just look up what Adobe, Apple, Blackmagic, etc. is doing on their website, and see and learn the same thing”.Aside from the NETWORKING side of NAB (meeting people, talking to manufacturers in person, and clients in person) – the other thing that you do at these trade shows is discover new products, or get more info on products that you NEVER thought about. How many of you are using HP RGS ? I bet lots of you would be going over to the HP booth to find out more about remote workflow.
As all of this insanity goes on, and I monitor as many forums as possible in our industry – there are products that I have NEVER EVER paid attention to – not even for 2 seconds – and now these companies are starting to become important. Companies like vMix, LiveU, Unity Intercom are all becoming important companies. I never really paid attention to NDI – well, now I better start paying attention to it.
It’s like when you take a new training course – you don’t even know what questions to ask. But then you find out what these products do, and you say “gee – I don’t get it – how does that work exactly” – and all of a sudden, you want to visit these companies to get an overview, and look at how their product works, and how it relates to you making a living.So that’s what we are missing without NAB. The new products, that do things that you are not even thinking about – but now all of a sudden, you say to yourself “boy, I wish I knew more about HP RGS or Teradici”. If NAB 2021 happens, I feel that the #1 focus of that show will be all the products we work with, but how they work with REMOTE ACCESS (and not so much 8K, HDR, etc.).
