as always, you are correct Neil. And as cheap as the Netgear 10G switches are, Buffalo already has cheaper 10G switches, and “someone else” is coming out with REALLY cheap 10G switches.
So the moral here is that it will be DIRT CHEAP to have shared storage that can do 4K Media for multiple users.
The real question for me is – how will the established large companies that make shared storage stay in business (that appear at IBC and NAB every year). QNAP, Synology, and Netgear ReadyNAS are becoming the “Blackmagic” of the storage world.A single iMac Pro will cost dramatically more than a multi user shared storage system, all with 10G.

use an old mac pro as the new server.
Or simply build a new boot drive with OS X Server. It’s 20 bucks.

from what I see, the iMac Pro’s top of the line ATI card (this is Radeon, they didn’t say ATI) – will be the equivalent of the
NVidia 1060, which is fine. But since the iMac Pro starts at $4999, are we talking about an iMac that is the same price as a blown out HP Z840, AND there are no slots ? I mean if we have a 5 grand machine, and the blown out version (which translates to the top of line GPU – so $8000 for the iMac) – well, that’s wonderful, but it’s sure not cheap. How many clients today will buy an $8000 computer. At least it “allegedly” will come with a 10G Ethernet network port (which I still can’t believe !).Bob Zelin

here is how you do it (I just did it in LA).1) buy a QNAP TS-831x
2) buy 8 HGST SATA drives (you pick the size, and YES, you need EIGHT drives – I don’t care if they are 1TB drives).
3) buy a Netgear XS708T switch
4) buy 2 licenses of Indiestor Mimiq
5) plug in your computersthat’s it. Now you have exactly what you want.
If you dare say “oh my God – that costs more than $500 dollars” – then I will fly to your location, and simply kill you.
This type of solution that works perfectly with multiple AVID’s is cheaper than ever in history. I am at the point in my life where if people say “I need to have multiple people editing uncompressed 8K footage for a major feature film, and my total budget is $300 to make this happen” – well, I am happy to go to jail, because these people need to die.Bob Zelin

Here is the simple answer to near line storage. As you may have discovered, the QNAP is equally as fast as the
EditShare, at a fraction of the price. Want near line storage – buy a second QNAP and run QNAP Backup Station RTRR (and if you don’t like that, run ChronoSync, Carbon Copy Cloner, etc.) – want it across town, in another building – you are at the mercy of your internet provider. Unless you have google fiber, you will pay a FORTUNE to have 800 Mb/sec.
Excuse me – you will pay a fortune to have even 100 MB/sec upload speeds, so in the US, keep it in another part of your building and you will have wonderful near line storage (and if it’s a 10G connection in your building, you will have backup that is not nearline – but full speed).People always ask me “what”s next”. What’s next is already here – but the politics of installing fiber lines (like Google does) is not going to happen in the next 20 years in the US. Companies like Spectrum (Charter Cable which was Time Warner) find it much cheaper to make a 10 Million Dollar campaign contribution to multiple state Governer’s and Senators, than to spend the money to actually dig up the streets, or GOD FORBID allow Google to enter the state so they can put them out of business with 800 Mb/Sec for everyone. The future is here. It’s now just politics to allow it to happen.

I have been doing this for a long time. I have been in the video business since 1978.
Exactly what is your question – “how can I get a system that will just work, and never have any problems ever
again” –
FORGET IT. Every system, every piece of technology has problems. You can buy anyone’s system.
SMB disconnects for no reason. Why ? GO ASK APPLE !!!
Can you get a nice QNAP and have it perform better – a QNAP with a nice 10G switch – yes, this will work wonderfully.
Will you have problems in the future – OF COURSE YOU WILL. If all this crap just plugged in and worked, and there were never any problems, then people like ME would never be employed. There are ALWAYS problems, and there is always aggravation, which is why every video facility, and every TV station maintains engineers (or freelance engineers) to
do this.
These days, I install QNAP’s all the time (and sinology too). And today, with an identical setup that I do all the time, with the exact same computers, exact same thunderbolt to 10 G adaptors, exact same QNAP (it could be any shared storage system – I do them all) – I have had NEW issues that I never saw before. And I am tearing my hair out. It makes no sense.This is what technology is – problems that make no sense, and you have to deal with this crap. And if you don’t want to deal with this crap, you find someone that is willing to do it for you (and you pay them to do so).
Again – I have been doing this since 1978. Things never just “plug in and work” – never have, never will.

you said G5, which was manufactured no later than 2005, which is when it was discontinued. . Please, please tell me that you are not using a 2005 computer to capture the genius of Stevie Wonder – please. It was a Mac Pro (2006 or later) – is this correct ?

For storage, we’re currently using Samsung T3 SSD drives, which are so fast and light, they can handle most things we throw at them. It’s a really slick and flexible set up. But with a few potential feature films in the near future, we are looking again at shared storage.
