iMac Pro with 10GigE
The new iMac Pro announced yesterday at WWDC will have a 10GigE port built in.
So now its even easier, with a small 10GigE switch, and a QNAP or comparable storage, to have a small workgroup sharing storage over high speed of 10GigE. With 4, 5, and 8 port simple 10GigE switches which will also ship later this year, the costs of shared storage will get to the point where if you need 3 people to share 4k footage and 4k speeds, it will no longer make sense to give each station its own storage.
iMac Pro will ship only end 2017 or maybe early 2018.

as always, you are correct Neil. And as cheap as the Netgear 10G switches are, Buffalo already has cheaper 10G switches, and “someone else” is coming out with REALLY cheap 10G switches.
So the moral here is that it will be DIRT CHEAP to have shared storage that can do 4K Media for multiple users.
The real question for me is – how will the established large companies that make shared storage stay in business (that appear at IBC and NAB every year). QNAP, Synology, and Netgear ReadyNAS are becoming the “Blackmagic” of the storage world.A single iMac Pro will cost dramatically more than a multi user shared storage system, all with 10G.

I may be just be lucky, but I haven’t had client machines with dedicated storage in over 5 years. Then again, I work on mostly collaborative projects for television or long-form / feature length productions and convince clients with smaller setups to have dedicated servers for various purposes.
I’ve built a few smaller scale 10GbE setups with consumer hardware for on-site productions over the last few years with very poor results. I’m not a particularly skilled network engineer but we ran in to a lot of issues with latency and speeds. I am pretty much exclusively using Arista switches at this point. They are probably the best investment I’ve made towards infrastructure in many years.
I am excited to see client machines with built in 10GbE though. My biggest concern will be seeing a lot of cheap storage solutions just into the prosumer space. I spent years battling failing thunderbolt RAID systems. Synology was actually a blessing in disguise for lower budget projects just because their software and system was so much more manageable. QNAP I haven’t had a lot of time with, but some of their newer offerings are very impressive from a hardware standpoint. I hope to see the SAN manufacturers really step up their game as a result. At this point we’re starting to battle how many K’s are loaded into whatever the latest camera is and it’s hard to stay ahead.

while Arista switches are wonderful, let me assure that the Netgear 10G series works wonderfully.
They have been used by Facilis, AVID and others (and I use them on the QNAP and Synology systems without issue).Bob Zelin
