the more drives you have spinning (either SSD or SATA) the faster the array will run. 4 drives run faster than 2, 6 drives faster than 4, 8 drives faster than 6. Buy a RAID – end of story. These products are not expensive. Don’t think about “what happens when I get a new PC or Mac Pro in 2019” – your gear will be obsolete by then – your 2014 MacBook Pro will seem silly in 2019. Everything becomes obsolete quickly these days. Buy what you need to make a living, and bill your clients. Don’t worry about your long term investment (one exception – buy a comfortable chair for yourself – that will still be good in 2019).

it’s funny –
you can have a 1950’s 1960’s Fender or Gibson and it’s worth $25,000. But a piece of technology (Korg, Roland, Yamaha) has no value. And let’s take that one step further. An early Apple Mac or a HP xw8000 has no value.
A Quantum DLT tape, or a Sony CRT BVM monitor has no value. Remember all the debates (I can’t use an LCD screen, my clients demand a CRT) – is similar to the morons that thought that Film would last forever and that 4K was a trend that would never be accepted by professionals. Very different from music. Rod Argent, while known for the B3 in Argent, used an old Whirlitzer in the Zombies for all the hit songs, and he was AMAZING. The old mechanical instruments like that hold value – the electronic stuff – all a bunch of junk.And don’t get me started on the Mellotron – because Ron Lindeboom himself will come out of retirement to comment on this !

QNAP has TOO many models. Every time they add one feature, it’s another model number.
It can be quite confusing.
And people always say “I am going to wait for the next model” (like a new Mac computer) –
well, you can’t do this with QNAP, as there is ALWAYS a new model.This week’s new model, about to be shown at NAB is the TS-1685, which is similar to the dirt cheap TS-1635, but with more powerful processors, up to 128 Gig of RAM, and of course, 12 SATA bays, 4 SSD bays, and free dual port 10G ports all for $2900 (the TS 1635 is about $1299). But the TS01684 can be expanded with 4 additional expansion chassis, at $1200 each with a $399 SAS expander card.
And please be assured that once you purchase this, 6 months from now, there will be a cheaper more powerful model. Who needs to wait for NAB or IBC, when every few months, whatever you have purchased is now obsolete !
With that said, there is no question that companies like QNAP, Synology, Thecus and Netgear ReadyNas (sorry Drobo, you are not in this club) are killing the American and Western European companies that make shared storage solutions, because of their impossible low prices.
It’s a crazy time.

I loved this thread, but come on, I have had this type of thread right here on Creative Cow forums over and over (and some with people that contacted me privately after seeing my posts on Creative Cow).
When I tell people that their Drobo won’t work as a shared storage system – they get offended. When I tell them that if their total budget is $1500, they can’t afford shared storage, they get offended. When I tell people that simply buying a Blackmagic ATEM Television Studio for $995 will not give them a complete television production system, they get offended. When people contact me privately, and ask me to design a full studio production system for them, and I tell them that I will charge them for this service, they get offended (“I thought you were here to help people, not rip them off”). You can’t tell some people that they can’t put raw dpx 4K files on the boot drive of an Apple Mac Book Pro Air – “of course it work’s, it’s gotta work – what is this external drive nonsense !!!”.
And of course, we have seen things, like when RED introduced the original Scarlet camera, that people were getting offended, because they simply could not shoot their feature film, unless RED would simply RELEASE THE DAMN CAMERA – as if owning a Scarlet was the magic key to making a successful feature film.
The analogy given about not being able to buy a new Lexus for $20,000 – and getting offended – is so accurate. We have all seen fancy restaurants trashed, because certain patrons cannot understand how any one can charge SO MUCH for a piece of steak or seafood, when they can see the prices at the grocery store – boy, those restaurants are just ripping you off !. This applies to every industry.

you guys should get Blackmagic to give you the new Web Presenter, so you can take any cheap garbage camera, stick it into the Web Presenter, and then stick the output into any laptop, and stream it via WiFi in the hotel (it will adjust the frame rate for crappy bandwidth).

I have been following the exact instructions that you have specified, based on “common knowledge” of what
works and what does not work. To be a little more clear, the boot drive (SATA or SSD) is for your applications, and if you refuse to buy a SSD for Media Cache and Media Database, then use your SATA boot drive for the Media Cache. But yes, using a SSD for the Media Cache makes a big difference. Then keep your projects and media on your shared storage volume, and NEVER EVER put the Media Cache on the shared storage volume, or your system will crawl, and take 20 minutes to open a project. The rules outlined by this wonderful article by Puget Systems applies to all shared storage systems, not just AVID Nexis.Bob Zelin

boy, you are all a bunch of old bags. I remember seeing all the posts about guys wanting to get together for
the Ampex QUAD tape reunion at NAB at O’Shea’s. What a bunch of old bags. Betamax ? Are you kidding me.
It reminds me of the guys I know that talk about 60’s music, and how only Hendrix, the Beatles, and Cream were good bands, and that everything sucks today.
