Betamax
Posted by Rich Rubasch on March 29, 2017 at 3:41 pmAnyone in the Madison WI area or Milwaukee/Chicago area have a working Betamax machine laying around? Have a few old tapes to transfer! Would love to do it here rather than send them out.

Well, we’re here in the deep south and nowhere near Chicago… but if you end up needing to outsource it, our Beta decks have been sitting unused in the racks for, gosh, I can’t even remember the last time they were used… it’d be nice to have an excuse to turn them on.

March 29, 2017 at 5:21 pmOh…. Betamax.
Sorry, I misread that as Betacam.
Betamax might be a taller order.

March 29, 2017 at 9:24 pmYeah… I haven’t seen an actual Betamax deck in probably, oh, 25 years or more. The last one I saw was at my friend Robert’s house, it was their bedroom VCR and had had the same tape stuck in it for years, his wife just reused the tape to record the same soap opera every day.
Have you considered….

March 30, 2017 at 8:27 pmBelieve it or not I had one two weeks ago. An electronic recycling company came to pick up a pile of old decks and apparently the Betamax was in the pile when I was sure it was somewhere else. It did have a sticker on it saying it didn’t work but I never tested it.
DOH!

March 30, 2017 at 9:56 pmboy, you are all a bunch of old bags. I remember seeing all the posts about guys wanting to get together for
the Ampex QUAD tape reunion at NAB at O’Shea’s. What a bunch of old bags. Betamax ? Are you kidding me.
It reminds me of the guys I know that talk about 60’s music, and how only Hendrix, the Beatles, and Cream were good bands, and that everything sucks today.
What a bunch of OLD BAGS. I am 61, approaching 62. I only want to know about new products, new technology, and NEW MUSIC. There ain’t none of these “young whipper snappers” that are going to get ahead of me – in anything.Bob Zelin

April 1, 2017 at 5:18 amI’m all the way in Southwest Florida, but I have a couple of Betamax machines that still work… the last time I tried them anyway.
You might want to check the Old VTRs List at https://groups.io/g/OldVTRS
There are many folks there that do transcription and preservation.
I also have a PVW 2800, BVW 40 and a BVH 2000. The PVW has a problem with the elevator I believe, but the BVW 40 works as does the 1-inch. What Zelin’s not telling you is that he probably has an IVC 9000 in his basement… if they have basements in Central Florida. 🙂
