I believe the modular design will never happen. I know for a fact, that with the current management regime, Apple does not want ANY product to exist for more than 5 years. Authorized repair shops are not allowed to work on hardware that is older than 5 years old. So they can sell you a $300 watch, or a $10,000 non existant Mac Pro, and in 5 years, they don’t want ANYONE to work on that Mac Pro if something fails – period.
I am a huge fan of Louis Rossmann and Rossmann Repair Group in NY City, and I find all of his videos very funny on the Mac product line, and Apple’s current attitude on repairing Macs. In summary – GIVE US MONEY.

this is an unusual question. When you say the editor wants “control” — if you go into this mixer, you will be able to monitor the independent channels into your speakers, but it’s not going to “control” the audio mixer in the AVID user interface. So even if you get this wired up for audio monitoring, please be aware, that this is not going to do a “mix” for you.

No.As you already know the Nitris DX has only 4 XLR analog outputs. If you had a fancier audio mixer with AES inputs
you could take the 25 pin with the cable that I listed above that breaks out into XLR’s and stick that into a digital
audio mixer, and do your monitoring – but it won’t control the AVID timeline for mixing – just monitoring.Bob Zelin

QNAP, Synology and Lumaforge are all excellent choices for your applications. When you mentioned HPE Storeasy, it makes me want to contact your President, and insist that your IT team become familiar with some new technology – ANY new technology, as long as its not Server 2012. And if they refuse, they should be fired.

your corporate IT department? While I have ranted about this type of solution for years on the forums (insulting everyone along the way) – because I still observe this happening (and always failing) – I can only ask one question to those that attempt to do it.
Why don’t you (the IT department) go to a video trade show to see what is out there? Why don’t you (not you Eric, the IT department) study products like LumaForge, Facilis, EditShare, GB Labs, Apace, QNAP, Synology, AVID, etc. Why must your solution be a Windows 2012 Server with a Cisco switch on a 1G network ? Why is this the only thing you know, and why do you “poo poo” any other type of solution? Why do you think that all of these companies exist ? How come companies like Dell and HP and Cisco are not wiping the floor with these “professional video solutions”. There is one simple reason – THEY DONT WORK, and the brain surgeons running these IT departments would rather fail, than to study these systems, and try to figure out why they work, and why their Dell/Cisco solution does not work.I hope that answers the question. There are a lot of wonderful solutions out there. But if your IT team things that they are just going to plug you into the office 1G network – well, you are all in for a very big surprise, and it won’t be a good one.

If you are serious about your hobby, you find the money to get your toys. If you love making videos, you find that 50 bucks. And when you own DR, or Media Composer First, or Lightworks, or Media 100, or an old copy of FCP 7 that someone gave you, you still need a computer, you still need drive space, and that costs more than 50 bucks.

absolutely everything works today. There is no need for fiber channel, XSAN, or any specialty hardware, especially now that SMB is supported for FCP X 10.3 You can use anything – QNAP, Synology, Lumaforge Jellyfish – they all work.
And so does everything else. Simply say GO> Connect To Server, and write your FCP X libraries to your hearts content.

while Arista switches are wonderful, let me assure that the Netgear 10G series works wonderfully.

plug in drive array to Mac Mini.
Get Promise SanLink2 or Sonnet Twin 10G on thunderbolt port (loop) of Mac Mini.Plug one client computer into one port, plug the other client computer into the other port.
In System Preferences> Sharing, enter in the two users that want to share the drive.

A blown out HP Z840 is expensive. (And all the guys will jump in and say “but I can build my own PC”) –
In the real world, a pro company is going to buy a Z840 or a Dell Precision top of the line.
Add the NVidia GTX 1080ti (the new Radeon card is said to be the equivalent of the GTX 1060 – honestly I don’t know the difference).
Now, add the amazing HP Z31X monitor ($4000 retail) that they showed at NAB (auto calibration, selectable LUTs)now you have an expensive hi end workstation. And I am sure that Boxx make an equivalent, or even faster system.
I don’t want to hear “but I can build my own PC for a fraction of the price”. Good for you.So these solutions are both around the $10,000 or a little more per workstation.
The flip side of this is the people that remember that you could buy a cheese grater Mac Pro Quad Core with 4 Gig of RAM, and it would run FCP 7 perfectly for $3000. These days, with Resolve, CC2017, Smoke – and no need for the “video gear” – I guess this price range is ok.
