yea – you have a bad cable. Try just using the 2nd channel – just use 2 drives and see if it works. Swap out with one of the cables from channel 1, and see if it works. There is no reason this should not work – people do it all the time. Cable pins get bent ALL THE TIME.

Although it would be nice to have the Horita BSG-50, you can send black from the Burst BB unit into the AJA I/O Reference In, and use the looping jack (right on the bottom) to feed the Beta VTR Ref Video In. Make sure that you throw the 75 ohm term switch on the VTR to ON, so you will be properly terminated. You will be fine.

sacci is correct. The I/O LA would be a good choice for you, but if you want to spend zero money, you could go firewire in as well. The Kona 3 is for SDI and HD SDI sources only.

For now, forget FCP. Download the AJA I/O Control Panel, and use the Input tab to select between component (so you see color) and composite. Use the same Beta VTR that you have for component, to feed the composite input – is it B+W (don’t use your VHS machine for now – use the Beta for these tests).
If it’s B+W, I would be surprised, but there is always the possibility that you have a problem with the I/O.
Of course, for everyones sanity, plug the composite video out of the Beta directly into your TV monitor, to make sure that your composite out of your Beta is putting out a color signal !!!

As for the SATA adaptor for your MAC PowerBook, what you want is the
SeriTek/1VE2+2 from Firmtek. This has 2 ports on it, and will allow you to hook up to 2 SATA drives. I use Firmtek enclosures, and the 2 bay they have is cheap, and reliable. 2 SATA drives stripped at RAID 0 can easily do
8 or 10 bit SDI, and DVCPro HD (and of course DV). 2 drives CANNOT DO uncompressed HD. You can get Firmtek stuff from

just use any id except 7 (which is the default ATTO SCSI ID). Feel free to use 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9,a,b,c,d,e,f. You can use the same numbers on the 2 different busses, as well – just avoid 7.
Use SHORT SCSI cables.

Hey Paul – it’s me ! I related a story about Port Authority and it’s bureaucracy recently – when you needed a floppy disk for an EDL, and no one could authorize the purchase for a lousy floppy disk. I remember Al Belva – I hope all those guys are all right from you know what at WTC.

You obviously have not worked with video patch bays, or the back of a video switcher, or router.

wait – are you telling me that the 002 can actually be used as a Firewire audio interface to Adobe Audition ? Where do you see this in any documentation from Adobe ? How would you get the drivers to read from the 002 ?
