You can run a RS422 deck control cable as long as you like (probably 1000′ without issue). It’s a balanced signal, and can travel LONG distances – I have personally run 300′ runs with no issue.

in the US, analog signals have blacks at 7.5 IRE, and digital signals have blacks at 0 IRE. This is not a Blackmagic, or Sony issue. Blame SMPTE.
If you look at a RS170A color bar signal going into a regular Sony Digi Beta VTR, and monitor on a TV mon that has SDI and analog inputs (think PVM-20L5 or PVM-20M4), and monitor on a scope than has multi function (like a Videotek VTM-200 or Leader LV5100D), you will see that the EXACT SAME SIGNAL looks “darker” in SDI, becuase the analog output black is at 7.5, and the SDI output black is at ZERO. Does this drive you and your clients crazy – YES – has this been an issue since the day SDI was introduced and people had to mix in analog sources with their SDI sources – YES. well, you know the answer now – but you won’t want to do it. Start from Zero – reinstall the OS (clean), check your drives (which will probalby be ok), and then install the AVID software.

you are such a bigshot, building your own boxes. Since you are buying the Sonnet E4P card for this application that uses the Silicon Image chipset, just buy the damn Sonnet Fusion 500P chassis, that has the correct, matching
chip set for the port multipliers inside the box. There is a purple piece of paper that comes with the Sonnet E4P that outlines the firmware upgrade (if you don’t own a Fusion 500P chassis). Since the Fusion is only $499 retail, how much are you saving by doing a “build it yourself”.Bob Zelin

there was a problem with Hitachi 400 Gig drives only, but since that time, I have only used the 500 Gig drives (both Seagate and Hitachi), with ZERO problems.

I don’t believe that you have checked all your cables. Plugging 1 cable in at a time is a very painful process, and most people don’t actually do it. Again, since you are having issues with Buss 2, plug in all the drives from Buss 1 to Buss 2. Does it work ? Now, take that loop cable from the “bad drive problem”, and replace it with one of the working cables. Does it work?
I know what a painful process this is, and how long it takes. This is one of the problems of troubleshooting SCSI problems. One bent pin will screw you. Add one drive at a time, and when one fails, switch out the cable to make sure it’s not the cable. You will eventually find the problem.
