how relevant is NAB and IBC these days ?
While I will go in 2018, Apple has not been there for years, and do you really need to bear the crowds
to see new software features in Adobe, Cinema 4D or Resolve. And doesn’t Blackmagic now have web previews
of what they will release at NAB ? And do they even wait for NAB or IBC anymore ? Of course, if you are looking for a new Jib, or lenses, or wireless systems, this does not apply to you.Bob Zelin

take the Direct TV analog component YPbPr output (and analog audio) into a Blackmagic or AJA Analog to SDI converter. It will work perfectly fine.

Hi Abbott –
you say that the WRITE rate is 88 MB/sec, but you have not said what you are getting for the READ speed.It sounds like you are testing a 1G connection, not a 10G connection. A 1G connection will max out at about 100 MB/sec read and write. Using the free download AJA Data Calc, Apple ProRes 4444 for Ultra HD 4K at 23.98 frames per second required 148.55 MB/sec, so you can see that your system is not fast enough for this. Even regular ProRes codec for 4K Ultra HD at 23.98 is 66 MB/sec, so you are barely fast enough with that array.
However you state that your array is 12 12TB drives in a NAS. What brand NAS ? Are you the one setting it up ?
Do you have a 10G connection on your computer (Mac or PC) to go to the NAS ? Lot’s of variables here.Bob Zelin

Monoprice HDMI to SDI converter (oh brother !) –
HDCP means High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection. It’s supposed to not work.
You take your cox cable box and go into a Blackmagic or AJA Analog to SDI converter (“you mean I have to return all these converters ?”) and that SDI output will go into your 20×20 videohub.
Why ? Because you are NOT SUPPOSED TO BE RECORDING OFF AIR. That’s why they invented this standard.
This was done SPECIFICALLY to prevent you, your client, and others from stealing off air content. You are supposed to PAY THEM for recording (and then re selling) their content.Bob Zelin

you are going about this all wrong.
You are working with video footage from a camera
What is the resolution (NTSC, HD, 4K, 6K, 8K)
what is the frame rate (23.98, 30)
what is the compression codec (ProRes, XDCam, XAVC, R3D, etc.)if your answer is “I don’t know” then you need to ASK THE CAMERA PERSON these questions.
You cannot go into an edit session, with no knowledge of how the media was shot.
I love when people say “I am working in 4K” – what does that mean – MP4, R3D, ProRes ? There are millions of variables.Your answer will help you set this. If you feel that AJA System Test is too overwhelming, try Blackmagic Disk Speed Test.
You have not even described your drive array that you are testing – how many drives, what is the interface to the computer ?

Hi –
you buy a NAS, load it with drives (8, 12 or 16), create a static volume, and make it RAID 6. (some newer systems allow for RAID 60). I would never do RAID 1+0. To create an expandable volume, you need to make a “thick volume” which is a storage pool. Again, I never do this. I need performance to be able to do 4K, 6K and 8K editing for multiple users. And I need to plan for failure, so if I add another chassis, I don’t care it expands to the same “MediaRAID” – it’s ok if it’s another volume that mounts. As long as if I have a power supply failure on a chassis, my entire system does not go down. Reliability is much more important than convenience.Bob Zelin

retrospect – really – certainly not in 2018 – how are they still in business.

The whole market is changing. Adobe ? Look at Resolve. LTO in general – the ONLY reason you are not using cloud backup is because of your CHEAP a#$ internet providers. If you had actual “hi speed”, you would not even consider LTO.
We are in changing times. The stock market is peaking. The way we do business will change very soon. And it’s not us to up.
