I am shocked that Tony is getting just like ME ! THATS RIGHT – are you CRAZY – why would you use an EXPENSIVE camera as a VTR. I had a SIXTY YEAR OLD PRODUCER (after telling him he was crazy for trying to edit from the Sony HDV camera) – tell me “don’t you edit Beta right from the camera ? – Someone with 35 years of experience asking me this – WHERE IS MY GUN ???There is this URGE from the marketplace to get rid of all these AJA, Blackmagic, Aurora, AVID products – all this “facility” equipment – and just edit right from the camera, and use NOTHING ELSE. The day this happens in real life, the world ends – REPENT !

here is what I would like you to do. Remember when you tested out your system with 8 bit and 10 bit uncompressed – you probably went into EASY SETUP and selected something like Betacam 8 bit uncompressed, and everything worked. Right ?Go into EASY SETUP, and select NTSC Betacam to DVCPro50 (or DV50, I am not in front of a system right now). Then, delete your current sequence, and open up a new sequence. Double click on it so it opens up. It will now be a DV50 (DVCPro50) sequence. Digitize away – I bet it works.
Working in DV50 is teriffic.

the day that you finally buy into whatever you are waiting for, Apple and all the associated companies will outdate the products, so that everything you own is useless. It is a conspiracy just against you, Sam. We all suffer because Apple, Adobe, AJA, and Sony hate you, and want to make sure that you are screwed the second that you buy your stuff – and the rest of us suffer for it.
What day should you buy into this technology – the day that a CLIENT is at your door, willing to PAY YOU MONEY no matter what the technology is. They want you to edit for them, and create a show, so they can PAY YOU MONEY. So, you buy the equipment, you make money (LOTS of money), and buy a new car for yourself. And a year from now, when you have to spend $5000 to upgrade some stuff – it’s no big deal, because you have made a PROFIT, instead of waiting for the end of changing technology.
Go out NOW, whip out that credit card, and buy a Quad – knowing very well that in November 2008, you will say “I can’t believe I spent $3200 on this piece of junk just 2 years ago”.
HOWEVER, if you decide to buy a deli slicer to slice salami, and roast beef (to make us all delicious sandwiches) – we will continue to give you business, while we suffer in dark rooms editing, with outdated equipment. And your deli slicer will not become obsolete.

I am convinced – you have a bad LHe card. The RS422 port is not working.
Certainly try to UNINSTALL and reinstall the AJA drives for this card, but I bet your card has an issue.Bob Zelin

you do not have to do anything. Thank God for the internet. I found a picture of the back of a Sony PVM-1944Q monitor. Look at the back of your monitor. See the EXT SYNC BNC connectors ? Above that is a RCA audio input, and to the right of that is a small switch that says RGB-COMPO.
Your switch is currently to the left – on RGB. Push the switch to the RIGHT – to COMPO (this is component or analog beta component input). NOW when you select component on the front panel of the monitor, you will get the CORRECT COLORS, but you must have the AJA selected to BETA COMPONENT, NOT RGB. NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER AGAIN select RGB for ANYTHING, and make sure that ALL of your gear (that has a choice) is selected to component, and not RGB.Now that you are switched to COMPO on the back of the montior, when you do the easy setup to Betacam 8 bit uncompressed (which will make the video output Y R-Y B-Y, and not RGB) – your colors will be CORRECT, and your Beta VTR will be fed the correct signal, and you will monitor the correct signal.
ONE SIMPLE SWITCH.

I don’t know what Beta VTR or DVCPro VTR you have, but if they are models that have editing features on the front panel, you can connect your RS422 cable between the DSR-45 and Beta VTR (for example), and put the DSR-45 into REMOTE, and try to control the DSR-45 from the front panel of the Beta VTR (like a PVW2800, or BVW-70).If you can control your Beta and DVCPro, but can’t control your DSR-45, it’s obviously your DSR-45 at fault. I ASSUME that you are plugging directly in from your Kona card, and not using an ABC 9 pin box. Am I correct about this – that you are plugging in DIRECTLY from the Kona to your VTR ?

My problem has not been resolved yet and I am hardpressed to find a solution. My video playback is set to US Betacam 10bit and everything is fine. I view my FCP timeline on the NTSC monitor using the Analog RGB Component mode. When I need to watch anything using just the beta deck, i then switch the monitor to VTR mode. This works fine. I am going to make some assumptions here, so please excuse me if I am wrong in my assumptions.
You say that you view your FCP timeline on the NTSC monitor using the Analog RGB component mode. THIS IS WRONG. I don’t give a crap what your graphics people want to work in. THIS IS VIDEO, and we work in Y R-Y B-Y Beta Component. This applies to Digi Beta, and everything else that is component video in the video world. Y R-Y B-Y or Y Pb Pr is NOT RGB. Now I have no idea if you have a TV monitor that is old and only has RGB inputs (old Sony monitors did – new ones can be switched between YRB and RGB) – but to work in THIS CENTURY (and thru the 1990’s), you MUST be in Beta Component Y R-Y B-Y. NEVER EVER EVER USE RGB.All of this is done automatically for you if you use the AJA EASY SETUP menu’s in FCP, where you just simply select NTSC Betacam 8 or 10 bit uncompressed (for example). Your playback output will be switched for you to Y R-Y B-Y (not RGB). Your TV monitor (like a Sony PVM20M2U, PVM20M4U, PVM20L5/1, PVM1954Q) will display the component signal in Y R-Y B-Y, not RGB. Older Sony PVM monitors could only display RGB, and these monitors are USELESS (unless you use them in composite only).
When you say when you need to view the Beta, you switch the monitor to VTR mode, I have no idea of what this means. I don’t recall any modern monitor have a “VTR” button on it. It would help me if you could please tell me EXACTLY what is the make and model # of the TV monitor you are using.
I know what you are thinking “this stuff used to work, and the other guy had it working, and now it’s just not working”. But if they were viewing RGB all along, THIS WAS WRONG ALL ALONG. For all I know, you have a boss that insists that his staff gets by with 20 year old equipment, like old monitors that cannot display YRB, and the staff “adapted” to his demands, by selecting RGB to display on old monitors. I just don’t know your situation, until you tell me the EXACT MAKE AND MODEL # of the TV monitor you are using.

I would love to hear a followup conclusion of this problem. Your system NEVER worked in RGB – always Y R-Y B-Y component. Once you select the easy setup as suggested by AJA, you should never have to change it – provided you keep using your Beta VTR.
