How Long will Universal Bin. Apps be Developed?
Posted by Sam on June 30, 2006 at 11:54 pmJust like many others, we are sitting tight to wait for MacPros. We were waiting to see what August brings but a project might have us change our minds right away…
So, we are looking into the Quad now? Just wondering,
Any reason NOT to buy the Quad with Kona 3 right now since its only another month (well hopefully)How long do you think the Quad will hold? i.e. How long do you think that the companies will keep developing both PPC and Intel software. Did anyone announce that they will ONLY releases Intel versions once MacPros come out?
I guess that is what we are afraid of..
Or should we pick up a MacBook or MBP for now and wait until the MacPros come out? Primary uses FCP Studio, Photoshop (Rosetta for Intels), After Effects (Rosetta).. Thats about it!Any thoughts?
Thanks

July 1, 2006 at 12:24 amthe day that you finally buy into whatever you are waiting for, Apple and all the associated companies will outdate the products, so that everything you own is useless. It is a conspiracy just against you, Sam. We all suffer because Apple, Adobe, AJA, and Sony hate you, and want to make sure that you are screwed the second that you buy your stuff – and the rest of us suffer for it.
What day should you buy into this technology – the day that a CLIENT is at your door, willing to PAY YOU MONEY no matter what the technology is. They want you to edit for them, and create a show, so they can PAY YOU MONEY. So, you buy the equipment, you make money (LOTS of money), and buy a new car for yourself. And a year from now, when you have to spend $5000 to upgrade some stuff – it’s no big deal, because you have made a PROFIT, instead of waiting for the end of changing technology.
Go out NOW, whip out that credit card, and buy a Quad – knowing very well that in November 2008, you will say “I can’t believe I spent $3200 on this piece of junk just 2 years ago”.
HOWEVER, if you decide to buy a deli slicer to slice salami, and roast beef (to make us all delicious sandwiches) – we will continue to give you business, while we suffer in dark rooms editing, with outdated equipment. And your deli slicer will not become obsolete.

July 1, 2006 at 2:13 amBob,
I’ll take a chicken breast sandwich no mayo or cheese please and a large Aquafina bottle of water to go.
I heard you were starting up a Subway franchise as they are much more profitable than the video biz.
Love that last post. Keep it up

I loved it! Every word of it and just cuz of that I am ordering the Quad with the Deli Upgrade 🙂 I wonder how fast those Quad Cores would slice that meat.. I’ll do some benchmarks and report back.
Thanks

Do NOT forget to order the “Solario Expresso” attachment. It’s been discussed quite a bit on this forum. Our own Marco Solario developed the product to take advantage of the extreme heat generated by the G5 machines. You can mount the spigot on the front or the back, but I prefer the front. Oh and splurge for the side mount milk tank. Makes frothing the milk much much easier.

July 3, 2006 at 9:09 pmI guess I should just bite my tongue, as I sit quietly waiting for the George Forman Grill/ExpressCard/34 slot adapter for my new MacBook Pro.
I can remember back when it took all day long to render a burger on my old Quadra 950.
Maybe I should clean out the attic… For sale Quadra 950 and Nubus Expansion chassis.

July 4, 2006 at 3:27 amWow! What a thread!
My dual 2 has got a George Foreman in Slot A and it sure renders those burgers really fast but darn thing is really hard to clean. I am hoping to get the ‘self cleaning’ version in the Quad soon!On a serious note, I was also wondering, do you think that most of the companies will release both PPC and Intel versions of the apps for at least next 3-4 years or am i way off?
Thanks

JasNo, I think that most companies want to go out of business, and will allow Apple to write the Intel version of the software. These other companies will only want to support legacy products, that are 3-4 years old (and older) – this is why you see support for so many OS-9 and Windows 98 applications on the market today. Now, is your question a serious question, or do you really think that ANY MANUFACTURER (except for crazy AJA and Blackmagic) gives a crap about 3-4 year old products. Your investment in your MAC G5 dual 2.7 and it’s related hardware and software will look pretty sad in 4 years. It does not mean that it still won’t be useful, and you can still make money with it. Proof of this is all the “old” AVID Meridian Systems, and 36 Gig SCSI drives that are still out there, making money. How much would you pay for a MAC G4 450Mhz machine running OS-9 ??? Just remember this – Sony 1″ VTRs and Sony D2 machines cost about $80,000 each – and today, you have to PAY to have a carting garbage company come if you decide to throw them out.

July 5, 2006 at 1:25 amBob,
Thanks but then I guess why would someone want to invest in a Quad right now if you think that most companies won’t be releasing PPC versions of their apps anymore? Given that you need the machine now but let’s say that you wait another 6 weeks for the Intel Pro and you’re waiting again until next summer until Adobe comes out with CS3/AE stuff. Now, if Adobe releases only the Intel version that Quad G5 today would be locked to whatever you have… as you pointed out with other examples…
So one is stuck either way and just got to pick I guess.
I (hope) that Adobe, Apple and ‘others’ still keep the PPC development for atleast couple more versions.

July 16, 2006 at 10:18 amNobody is talking about releasing Intel-only versions (including Adobe, who will release UBs just like everyone else). Until PowerPC’s share of the market is so small as to be insignificant, then such a move makes no business sense. PPC isn’t going to disappear overnight so I’d expect we’ll see UB versions released for at least another couple of years.
It’s always difficult to make decisions during a major transition period however I think it boils down to this:
1. If you earn a living from the tools – software and hardware is now so ridiculously cheap that if you can’t make your money back within 18 months, you’re in the wrong business.
2. If you aren’t earning a living from the tools, then you don’t need the latest and greatest anyway, so be happy with what you’ve got and save your money 🙂
