I just got caught with that EXACT SAME THING !!!!!! Rudy Van Kol at AJA told me about this, and I posted a detailed thing about this (Along with the Apple notes on it) on the XSan forum on Cow. I sat there (back and forth) for a WEEK trying to figure out what it was, and it was just the Cache Flushing setting.

when you say “woo – just imagine” – do you mean that they would make great workstations, or that they would make great workstations for $129. Because the xw8200 is a great workstation, but it costs a lot of money. I take it you never paid $400,000 for a SGI Onyx.

when you say “crash” – you mean the MAC locks up compeltely right ? Could be ANYTHING – could be flakey RAM. It takes TIME AND MONEY to find problems like this. I suggest replacing the RAM(with a minimum amount of RAM, just for testing), and removing the Kona and drive host card (SATA, Fibre, SCSI), and see within an hour or two, if the MAC crashes. Then add back the Kona, wait for 2 hours, then add back your host adaptor. If everyting still works, you have flakey RAM.
Why can’t there be an error message that simply says “DIMM in Slot 2 has failed”, or Fibre Host ADaptor has crashed CPU operation”

no one in their right mind would trust the FCP scopes for accuracy. Eric Peters – designer of the AVID Media Composer, always stated that the AVID internal scopes were for a quick reference only, and not to be used for critical alignment, and that an EXTERNAL SET OF HI QUALITY SCOPES should always be used on an AVID. You are DREAMING if you think that you are getting a hi quality set of accurate scopes within FCP. I have never seen one broadcast operation, or TV station rely on FCP or AVID internal scopes to monitor their levels. You must have an external set of scopes.
Sorry – that comes right from the top. And yes, I know they cost a fortune.

if you are trying to build a minimum cost HD edit station, with a HP xw4300, it will not work. I am RIGHT NOW on a HP xw4100 – it’s a great computer for firing up cards, testing out drives to see if they work, and typing on the internet (I test everything on this computer) – but for a REAL WORKSTATION that has to be fast, and do real jobs, you need a powerhouse computer – not an economy computer like the xw4300. If I had to buy another computer tomorrow for myself, it would be the xw4300 – but that is for screwing around and testing (and being on the internet) – not doing HD video and hi end graphics.Just because the Blackmagic cards are very low priced, it does not mean that anything else in your system will be low priced (except Behringer audio products).

I have no idea of what monitor you are using – is it a new monitor, an old monitor, a professional monitor, a monitor that takes RGB, or takes Beta component Y Pb Pr, or is it switchable ? The analog component signal out of modern capture cards conform to Sony Beta standards, which are Y, Pb, Pr (or for Sony Y, R-Y, B-Y), which have SYNC ON Y or sync on green. But this is for Y Pb Pr, not for RGB. There are plenty of OLD Sony “pro” monitors that did not do Y Pb Pr, but only did RGB, and this is not going to be a friendly monitor to any modern capture card (although you can choose a menu to select RGB if you are so inclined). If you state the EXACT monitor you are using, it would be helpful for me to identify your problem. In the 21st century, video pros dont’ use RGB (don’t say that to After Effects guys or Discreet guys, becuase they will kill you).

yes – two boxes with 10 drives – all stripped together – will give you fast enough performance for uncompressed HD. Please remember that this means that you cannot have 2 seperate volumes of 5 drives each. You must use Apple Disk Utility (or Microsoft Disk Manager – someone caught me last time, when I forgot this !) to stripe ALL THE DRIVES RAID 0.
I have never tried the 3Ware. The popular SATA controllers in the US now are the Sonnet and the Firmtek (and the firmtek currently does not support Port Multiplication).

This is my stupid opinion. I have (foolishly) declined for the moment to try the CalDigit S2VR, because it is a few pennies more than the other SATA solutions on the market currently (so my statements here might be stupid ) – but the RAID 0 Sonnet Fusion 500P – which uses the same damn 5 Hitachi or Seagate SATA II drives, can only do write speeds of 170mb/sec, which is NOT FAST ENOUGH for 10 bit uncompressed HD-SDI. You really need 220mb/sec at least (and faster) – so more than 5 drives (like 8-10 drives) will do this – but 5 drives won’t do it. (You do get read speeds of 220 mb/sec – but you DO have to record this stuff, somehow !!!!!!).
If CalDigit (with their RAID 1+0) can do these speeds, then I have no idea of how they are doing it – but I don’t see how they can get 220mb/sec with only 5 drives. For reference to check my stupidity, look at http://www.barefeats.com and http://www.amug.org for studies in SATA drive speeds. My comments are solely based on my own personal experiences, and do not reflect what the CalDigit can or cannot do.
Please remember – there is a big difference between being able to do it – and do it reliably, so you can actually get thru a job.

Can I get my Kona SD to work in the MAC Pro ?
can you refund my money that I paid for my Kona SD, to get a new Blackmagic card ?
Can I do uncompressed HD on the Mac Pro with a Firewire 400 drive ?
Can I send my Pinnacle CineWave card to AJA to get it to work in the MAC Pro ?
Now that the MacPro is out, can the Kona 3 work with the AVID MC Software ?
Do I still need to buy a Black generator if I get the MAC Pro ?
Will HDV look like 4:4:4 HD-SDI if I get the Mac Pro ?come on – at least some of these are funny.
